Dear Judged
Where are the good regional/medium sized firms?

I am an evening law student in Washington, DC, who graduates in May 2007. My school only seems to bring the big law firms on campus. Besides fruitless hours of combing through Martindale-Hubbell, are there any sources that list the best boutique firms?

Thanks!

Dear amdc,

Although all LexisNexis search capabilities are extremely helpful, their Martindale-Hubbell lawyer locator is not the only way to find the small boutique firms that specialize in niche practice areas. Definitely look into the International Network of Boutique Law Firms website. The have a list of firms all over the world, as well as offering up-to-date legal news.
Vault is also a good service to use. You can search the Vault Job Board, which often has listings for employment with boutique firms, at http://www.vault.com/. This website not only lists jobs, but also offers information on companies and industries, as well as job advice and other services.
There are a number of legal staffing agencies that could help you narrow your search, and would filter out jobs that don’t meet your specifications. Some of these include roberthalflegal.com, bcgsearch.com, and lawcrossing.com. These are all sites that cater to the legal profession, which might be a better way to search than with general job-search sites like monster.com or careerbuilder.com.
You can, essentially, find boutique firms just by searching the web. I tried Google-ing “boutique firms”, and the search results included not only job-finding sites, but actual job listings.
So, it may be easier than you think to find boutique firms. The only thing I should add is that you want to make sure that a firm calling themselves a boutique firm actually specializes in a certain area of practice. Boutique firms are the new hot thing right now, and you just want to make sure that the firm you are considering is not just calling themselves a boutique firm as a marketing tactic. Do your research. Visit firm websites and read about what they do, this will help you determine where you want to go.
