Dear Judged
To be or not to BeI have got an offer to
join JAG which at first seemed something out of the world to me.
But looking at it from a serious point of view do you think I should
take it up as I’ve just completed a year as a full time attorney in a
private law firm. Do you think I should take up this option
later on and continue being what I’m doing at present.
I’ve tossed and turned in bed for a couple of
nights.

Dear Doppiedaps,
JAG
is…interesting. I’m going to assume you realize that working
for JAG isn’t going to be like A Few Good Men. I’m
also going to assume that you can indeed, handle the truth (sorry, I
couldn’t resist). Seriously, I think you should look in to the
specifics of your offer: find out where you’re going to be stationed,
what your specific work will be, etc. You’re location will have a big
impact on your work, and ultimately, your happiness. I know a lot of JAG
attorneys are getting pushed out to Iraq, which doesn’t really appeal
to me. I also know a few people who worked for JAG who got stuck in the
middle of nowhere for two years. True story: one of them lived in a trailer
next to a guy who decapitated his cat…with a machete.

On the positive side, JAG does give great benefits, and a day of weapons training (if you’re a guy, you probably find this appealing). So if its your dream, go for it…just make sure you know what you’re getting in to.
