Law firms penalized for failing to produce WTC insurance documents

Two law firms, Wiley Rein LLP and Coughlin Duffy LLP, and their associate Zurich American Insurance Company have been penalized with $1.25 million in sanctions by the New York federal judge. Both law firms and the insurance company have been found guilty for failing to produce WTC's insurance documents in the court.

The printout of 62-page document was produced on the day of terrorist attacks for Zurich American's chief underwriter Mary Merkel. The document is considered to be a vital proof for WTC's insurance claims. The fraud was committed in an attempt to minimize WTC claims against the insurance company. The federal judge's ruling was in response to a dispute on whether WTC leaseholders Larry Silverstein had acquired liability coverage from Zurich American before 9/11 for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and for Westfield Corp.

Whitehill launches software to automate law firms' business process

Whitehill Technologies, Inc. has introduced Whitehill BPI for Legal 5.6 software that would support law firms in workflow and data integration.

By adopting this newly designed software, the firms can automate critical procedures and thus enhance their efficiency in a big way. For instance, when a firm enters into a new business relationship, it has to tackle complex and lengthy processes to make sure that there are no disputes with existing matters. Whitehill BPI will enable the firm to bill the client at the earliest. It would also assist the firms in other crucial aspects such as hiring of new people and monitoring requests and ethical walls. Law firms use ethical walls to protect sensitive information. "Law firms can use the graphical modeling interface in Whitehill BPI for Legal to model, design, and automate any business process," informed Rob Stote, the product manager of Whitehill Technologies.

Law firms pay to obtain a privilege to serve

Law firms in the U.S. are known for their pro bono services. However, have you heard of law firms, whose unbridled passion for such services goes to such an extent that they do not even mind paying for providing such services?

Lawyers Without Borders Inc. is one such nonprofit organization that endeavors to empower the legal process across the globe. The organization has solicited law firms to donate $7,500 a year, reports Wall Street Journal. This little charity on the part of the firms will ensure that they have an access to Lawyers Without Borders Inc.'s cases.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts Inc. is another nonprofit organization that provides legal services to the arts community. The firms that contribute for the cause can have the desirable cases.

In some instances, the law firms provide office space or even clerical help to the organizations that help them in getting pro bono services.

Martindale-Hubbell ties up with Spot Runner for first-of-its-kind local TV Ad

A few legal firms in the U.S. are all set to shed their garb of seriousness, as LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell and Spot Runner have joined hands. The former is a high-flying publisher of legal directory while the latter is an Internet-based advertising company. This novel partnership would address the issues of family law, drunken driving, personal injury, and general practice in a light hearted manner via the 'television advertising' way. Commercials for criminal and immigration law are also in pipeline.

Being reasonably priced, Martindale-Hubbell's low-budget advertisements will be aired on local markets on top-rated broadcast and cable channels like CBS, CNN, ESPN, and Fox News. Despite the fact that the Spot Runner website offers a general library off-the-shelf commercials, the ads for Martindale-Hubbell affiliates would be especially tailor-made to suit its requirements. "By teaming up with Spot Runner, we are now the first legal services company to offer law firms of all sizes an affordable product that allows them to capitalize on the power of television to build their brands and attract new clients," said Sharon Lubrano, senior director of product management for LexisNexis.
