Ray Quinney to establish new tech and science practice

Ray Quinney & Nebeker, a Salt Lake City law firm, raided national law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati to enrich its practice areas with five attorneys. The move stems from the firm's desire to establish a solid practice in technology and life science companies, "The Venture Practice." Many of these companies are financially aided by institutional venture capital investors.

Mark Bonham, a corporate and securities partner, and Matthew Wells, a venture capital attorney at the national firm, joined the new firm as shareholder. The duo will be joined by senior associates Aaron Murdock, Chris Shoff, and Justin Judd together with supporting staff members in forming the firm's new Venture Practice. The new attorneys at the firm have vast experience in venture capital transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and public offerings, including Utah IPOs for Omniture, Altiris, Overstock, and Sonic Innovations, said James Jardine, Ray Quinney's managing director. These incoming attorneys have served as legal advisor on nearly 100 venture capital transactions, 80 bridge financings, besides 46 M&A deals. With the new recruits, Ray Quinney now has more than 100 attorneys on its roster. The new attorneys will be working in the law firm's principal office in Salt Lake City, and its branch office in Provo.

Delgado, Acosta, Braden, and Jones dissolves law firm

One of El Paso's largest law firms, Delgado Acosta Braden & Jones, P.C., has dissolved. Three of the four named partners, Hector Delgado, Alejandro Acosta, Jr., and John R. Jones, have joined forces with an Austin-based law firm, Bickerstaff, Heath, Pollan & Caroom.

The Austin law firm, which will now be known as Bickerstaff, Heath, Delgado & Acosta, specializes in state and local government law. Delgado and Acosta will join in as partners at the El Paso office of the new law firm where Acosta will serve as the CEO. The two new partners bring a wealth of legal experience as well as a rich history of accomplishments to the new firm. Their new firm will retain Delgado and Acosta's Dallas and Houston offices.

The third partner, John R. Jones, will oversee the Houston office. Besides Jones, two other attorneys from the former firm joined the Austin firm. Ricardo Ortiz and Catherine Than have joined the commercial litigation section at Bickerstaff. Ricardo Ortiz will be based in the Dallas office, while Catherine Than will practice in the Houston office. This makes Bickerstaff, Heath, Delgado & Acosta the largest minority-owned firm in the Southwest comprising 18 partners and 30+ lawyers across the state.

The remaining 11 former firm's lawyers have found jobs or started their own practices, informed Acosta. Paul Braden, the fourth partner, on the other hand, joined international law firm Fulbright & Jaworski, as partner in El Paso.

K&L Gates combats weak cellular signal in new offices

Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis, LLP's (K&L Gates) 500 lawyers and staffers using wireless handhelds faced huge problems owing to weak cellular signals from its proximity to the White House. Poor cellular signals face problems penetrating massive steel high-rises and structures. In Washington, the problems are compounded owing to height restrictions in the area, which makes the builders to add multiple basement floors.

To combat with the problem of poor indoor cellular coverage, the law firm roped in San Jose-based LGC Wireless Inc., to install special indoor antennas to boost cellular signals. LGC's new system enables employees to use cell phones in offices three floors underground. The law firm incurring an expenditure of about $80,000 installed the LGC InterReach Unison system. Happy with the outcome, it also asked T-Mobile to install a mini base station worth about $20,000, and Verizon for a rooftop antenna at about $50,000. Rodney Carson, director of administration for the Washington headquarters of K&L Gates said that the firm's cell users as well as clients and attorneys are happy with the system's effect. The law firm also has Wi-Fi service installed throughout the new building.

A privately-held leader in specialized wireless coverage and capacity solutions for carriers and enterprises, LGC Wireless ships more than 10,000 systems to more than 100 countries worldwide.
