Merger on cards for international law firm Chadbourne & Parke

International law firm Chadbourne & Parke is considering a merger with London-based law firm Watson, Farley & Williams. The talks about the merger are in the primary stage, informed Chadbourne's managing partner Charlie O'Neill.

The new development is in keeping with the Managing Partner O'Neill's acknowledgment last year of the possible gains that Chadbourne could make from the merger. Chadbourne had not one but numerous suitors before it finally settled for a dialogue with this London-based firm.

The union of both the firms would actually turn out to be good news, as they jointly stand to gain revenues worth $350 million. Moreover, the firms could enjoy the benefits of a collective attorney strength which in all likelihood would be 600 in number. Chadbourne faced tough times in 2005 when its profit plummeted by 4.7%, while the profit per partner dipped below $1 million mark. However, soon the firm overcame losses and made profits.

Gray Haile and Day Pitney forge an alliance

Two boutique firms Gray Haile, LLP, and Day Pitney, LLP, have entered a mutually gainful relationship, whereby both the firms could considerably leverage from each other’s expertise. In addition, both the firms would jointly pitch for new business breakthroughs.

Gray Haile is headquartered in Washington, DC, since 2006. Its expertise lies in mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, leveraged buyouts, joint ventures, corporate financing transactions, private security placements, and venture capital. The firm has many seasoned attorneys on its board. On the other hand, minority-run Day Pitney—formed after the merger of Day, Berry & Howard and Pitney Hardin—is one of the 150 largest firms in the U.S. with about 400 lawyers spread in it nine offices.

The well-calculated alliance is designed in an apparent bid to motivate law firms to back minorities in their retention and promotional processes, stated Metrocorpcounsel.com. Despite the alliance, both the firms would work on independent basis. They would assist each other when required with Gray Haile enjoying all the rights of Day Pitney’s resources at its Washington, DC, office.

Mintz Levin recognized for its strong industrial focus

In an interesting find, the Corporate Board magazine has declared Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C, as the top corporate law firms in Boston. The results were brought out by the publication's seventh annual Legal Industry Research Survey. The directors serving on the board of publicly traded companies, and the in-house counsel were made part of the survey carried out by Corporate Board. The magazine accorded fourth rank to Mintz Levin's this year. The magazine's July/August issue will carry the complete coverage of the survey results. Corporate Board Member's annual study covers top 20 national corporate law firms in America and the top five corporate law firms in 25 major metropolitan areas. To be counted among top 20 regional law firms, each firm not only had to compulsorily practice business, corporate or commercial laws but even had to be big in size when it comes to attorney numbers.

LSBA acknowledges Womble Carlyle missionary work with Katrina victims

Womble Carlyle has bagged the Pro Bono Publico award for the year 2007 for the firm's unflinching support to Hurricane Katrina victims. The award was given away by the Louisiana State Bar association (LSBA) on its 66th Annual Meeting in Sandestin, Florida. Total six pro bono awards were given away by LSBA General Assembly on this occasion. The pro bono project was designed in collaboration with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) in an endeavor to offer free legal aid to New Orleans residents who were left with damaged or destroyed property when the killer Hurricane Katrina struck their shores. Put up in their family homes, the low-income habitants of New Orleans were still to transfer the title of their ancestral homes in their names. Resultantly, they failed to claim for damages and destruction. Womble Carlyle's project was solely aimed at establishing the title of their family homes, so that the victims could claim the federal, state, and insurance assistance and reconstruct their homes.

DAV join hands with top three law firms to aid war veterans

The injured soldiers returning from the war-torn zone of Afghanistan and Iraq have something to cheer. The Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization set up to support disabled veterans, is supposedly joining hands with three renowned Washington, DC law firms - LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, King & Spaulding, and Foley & Lardner. These firms will provide free legal assistance to soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington and the National Naval Medical Center located in Bethesda, Md., the two prominent medical centers known to admit wounded soldiers. The arrangement would seemingly provide some succor to the veterans who suffer low disability rate. All these years the defense department has been giving cold shoulder treatment to these veteran war heroes. Bereft of lifetime compensation and benefits comprising of health care coverage for themselves and their families, the veterans were passing through a bad patch of their lives. Moreover, the appointment of JAG officers, the military attorneys, was like rubbing salt on their raw wounds. Already loaded with cases, they seem to do no justice to the veterans' requests. Now with three law firms on DAV's board, the injured forces can look forward to a better and brighter future for themselves and their family members.
