Atlanta Legal Aid welcomes attorney from UPS

Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc. recently welcomed a lawyer from United Parcel Service of America, Inc. (UPS), the world's biggest supply chain services and package delivery company. Ryan Swift is posted as a corporate-sponsored appointee at Atlanta Legal Aid Society. A lawyer at UPS headquarters, Swift begins a four-month assignment with the Legal Aid Fellowship Program. UPS is first of a kind in the nation to assign its attorney for such a long-term assistance.

Swift has been working as a paralegal in the UPS legal department for the past 10 years. At Legal Aid, he will report to its Cobb County office for four months, and simultaneously receive his salary and benefits from UPS as well. Teri McClure, UPS senior vice president, Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs, believes that partaking programs away from office turns UPSers into better managers. Atlanta Legal Aid serves low-income people with civil legal services.

New York judges complain for lack of pay raise

Judith S. Kaye, chief judge of New York, has threatened to sue the state because of the lack of proper pay raise.

New York ranks 48th in the country in judicial pay, claims a study carried out by the National Center for State Courts. The judges of New York have not seen any hike in their salaries since 1999. The study further states that since 2004, the number of judges asking for loans against their pensions has increased by 10%. Terming the condition "unacceptable", the leaders of the State Bar Association and Trial Lawyers Association asserted that such situations mar the endeavors toward drawing the "best and brightest minds" to the court.

After Kaye's threat to sue, Gov. Spitzer has termed the complaint "frivolous", and added that even if New York judges take their battle for higher salaries into court, they would hardly win.
