Dear Judged
Partnership DeniedI have been working at a firm in Pennsylvania for the past 15 years.
According to the company policy I was supposed to become a partner by mid
2007. But things don’t seem to be going that great. The law firm says
that there are certain policies of the firm which are changing this year.
So I would have to wait for some more time. I don’t feel this is
right. It’s BigLaw I’m talking about. I thought it will
definitely take care of these issues. I haven’t been given specific
details about it as of yet.

Dear Doppiedaps,
It may not be right, but it doesn’t sound like the firm will offer
you a partner position any time soon. I hear a lot of stories like this,
where due to “firm policy changes”, mergers, or lay offs, firms
retract on their offers. I would suggest you stick it out for a bit and
make sure that the firm is not going to make you partner; if that’s
the case, then you should start looking for a new position. With 15 years
of experience at a large law firm, it’s quite possible that
you’ll find a better position elsewhere. Good luck!

Summary: This is a great question. There are many factors that impact a candidate’s ability to lateral from an overseas law firm to a top U.S. law firm.
