Shannon Gracey partner elected Vice Chair of State Bar of Texas Labor and Employment Law Section
Shannon Gracey partner Patrick Maher was elected Vice Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Texas at the Section’s annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas on June 21, 2007. Mr. Maher previously served as the Section’s Secretary and will be eligible for election as Section Chair in 2008. Mr. Maher has served on the Section’s Executive Council since 1999 and was Chair of the Tarrant County Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section in 1997-98. Mr. Maher is Board Certified in Labor and Employment Law by the Texas Board of Legal Certification and is a frequent speaker on Labor and Employment Law topics.

Twelve Hughes & Luce Attorneys Listed in D Magazine's "The Best Lawyers in Dallas"
D Magazine recently revealed its list of this year’s “Best Lawyers in Dallas,” including 12 attorneys at Dallas-based Hughes & Luce. The list ran in the publication’s May 2007 issue.

D Magazine asked all attorneys with a valid Texas Bar number to indicate their primary practice area. Then they were asked to nominate up to two lawyers outside their own firm and one at their firm and in their respective practice group based on this question:

“Which Dallas lawyers, of those whose work you have witnessed firsthand, would you rank among the current best?”

Once the initial votes came in, D Magazine recruited a panel of Dallas attorneys to evaluate the list.

Jean Groleau appointed Chairman of Board of Directors of the Association de planification fiscale et financiere (APFF)
Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jean Groleau as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association de planification fiscale et financière (APFF).

Jean Groleau has been practising tax law for over 15 years and has developed expertise in the field of tax litigation, both from an administrative and judicial point of view. Admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1989, he served as Québec Crown Counsel from 1989 to 1997. During this period, he represented the Minister of Revenue in court cases relating to sales and income taxes, penal and criminal charges with respect to tax offences and collection of taxes, and in numerous matters relating to administrative and constitutional law. Mr. Groleau joined FMC in 1997 and became a partner in 2000.

Mr. Groleau is often invited as a lecturer on behalf of both the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Association de planification fiscale et financière (APFF). His philanthropic activities include his membership on the Board of Directors of the Fondation de l’Hôpital Sainte-Justine. He is also Co-Founder and Chair of the Board of Administration of the Ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay Foundation.

V&E Partner Gib Walton Sworn in as Texas Bar President
Gib Walton, one of the premier trial lawyers in the Southwest and a partner at Vinson & Elkins LLP, was sworn in Friday as the 127th president of the State Bar of Texas.

Mr. Walton, who has first-chaired more than 40 jury trials and been lead counsel in more than a thousand lawsuits, arbitrations and appeals, was elected last year to lead the state’s legal profession of more than 80,000 lawyers in 2007-2008.

During his 30 years of practicing law, Mr. Walton has represented plaintiffs and defendants in corporate, securities, commercial, fiduciary, construction, professional liability (architect, engineer, legal, and accounting malpractice), product liability, probate, and oil and gas/energy litigation. He has been certified as a specialist in Civil Trial since 1981, by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

“Gib has long been dedicated to giving back to the profession through service in bar organizations and service to the community," said V&E Managing Partner Joe Dilg. "He is a great trial lawyer and he will make a significant contribution as President of the State Bar."

D. Gibson Walton was born in Houston in 1950. He went to college at the University of Virginia where he played football and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He attended the University of Texas School of Law, serving as an editor on the Texas Law Review and graduating with honors in 1975. He clerked for the Honorable Malcolm R. Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit before joining V&E in 1976. He became a partner in 1982. Chambers USA has named Mr. Walton as one of America’s Leading Business Lawyers in commercial litigation in 2005-2007. Texas Monthly has listed him as a “Texas Super Lawyer" every year that those rankings have been published. He has been elected by his peers to the International Society of Barristers and the American Board of Trial Advocates.

"The lawyers at Vinson & Elkins have a tradition of serving as leaders of the legal profession, as well as their communities," said Mr. Walton. “My father set a great example for me with a life-long career as a public servant in the law – serving as Harris County District Attorney and as a district judge.

"I want to thank all of my partners at V&E for their support of my taking this time to serve the bar and our profession,” he said. “During the next year, I hope to lead a statewide public education initiative that will focus on the critical importance of the rule of law and our system of justice to everyone in our society."

Steven A. Karg Named Second Vice President of Somerset County Bar Association
The Somerville law firm Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A. is pleased to announce that member Steven A. Karg has been named Second Vice President of the Somerset County Bar Association for a one-year term.

A resident of Branchburg, Karg focuses his practice on commercial litigation with an emphasis on products liability defense. He has substantial experience defending manufacturers and/or distributors of a wide variety of products such as prescription medications, tobacco products, industrial equipment, marine engines, chemicals and chemical processing systems, automobile lifts, pumps, tow tractors, automobile accessories, trailers, forklifts, fasteners, soil remediation and food preparation equipment. He regularly represents clients at both the trial and appellate level.

Karg frequently speaks to various organizations about products liability issues including the American Bar Association, Meritas, Inc., New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association, New Jersey Defense Association, New Jersey Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, New Jersey Chapter of the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Society, Northeast Pharmaceutical Attorneys and the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education. In addition, he has also authored many articles on various products liability and toxic tort issues.

Karg is a member of the Somerset County Bar Association (Treasurer, 2005-2007; Trustee, 2002-2005; Co-Chairperson, Civil Practice Committee, 2002-2004), the New Jersey Defense Association (Vice President, Central Region; Chairperson, Products Liability Committee, 2004-2006) and the Defense Research Institute (Member, Products Liability and Drug & Medical Device Committees).

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw advises Numis Securities Limited and Cowen International Limited on the IPO of AOI Medical Inc.
Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP's London corporate group has advised Numis Securities Limited and Cowen International Limited on the Initial Public Offering of AOI Medical Inc. (AOI) on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange, raising a total of £8 million from the placing of new common shares. Trading in AOI's shares began trading on Friday 22 June.

AOI Medical Inc. is a medical device company focusing on the innovation of orthopaedic medical devices for the spine and trauma markets. Investment banks Numis Securities Limited and Cowen International Limited also acted as joint bookrunners, with Numis acting as nominated adviser and broker to AOI.

The money raised will be used to continue the development of AOI's three technology platforms: BAMF spine, BAMF Trauma and Cervical Plate. It will also fund business development and marketing expenditure as well as establishing US-based sales and marketing.

London corporate partners Robert Hamill and Paul de Bernier (US qualified) led the Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw team, assisted by corporate assistant Rodney Edgerton and IP assistant Sangeeta Puran.

King & Spalding Represents Newfield Exploration Company in Sale of Shallow Water Gulf of Mexico Portfolio
King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, represented Newfield Exploration Company in the sale of its producing properties in the shallow water Gulf of Mexico to McMoRan Exploration Co. for $1.1 billion in cash and the assumption of liabilities associated with future abandonment of wells and platforms. The sale is expected to close in July 2007, subject to customary closing conditions.

King & Spalding also represented Newfield in today’s close on a new $1.25 billion credit facility.

Newfield expects to utilize Internal Revenue Code Section 1031 Tax Deferred Exchange rules for the sale of its Gulf of Mexico shelf assets and the recent $575 million acquisition of Rocky Mountain assets from Stone Energy. In connection with Newfield’s announcement of the Stone Energy transaction, it intends to market its assets in Bohai Bay, China, and in the UK North Sea.

Newfield Exploration Company is an independent crude oil and natural gas exploration and production company.
