Honigman Attorney Served as Peer Reviewer for Recently Released National Academy of Sciences Report
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP has announced that the chair of its Environmental Law Department, Steven C. Nadeau, was recognized as a peer reviewer of the recently released National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Report entitled “Sediment Dredging at Superfund Megasites: Assessing the Effectiveness.”

Contaminated sediments can be found at the bottom of many U.S. rivers and other water bodies near former mining, agricultural, or industrial sites. The technical feasibility, cost and complexity of contaminated sediment sites is a significant challenge nationally, with some estimates that the price tag to address this issue could exceed $1 trillion. Many of these sites are slated for cleanup by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the federal Superfund program. A minimum of 14 of them are sediment "megasites" -- where the cost of remediating sediments is expected to reach at least $50 million or already has.

Decisions about whether to dredge at these sites have proved controversial, so Congress asked the National Academy of Sciences to evaluate the method's effectiveness. To form its conclusions, the NAS Committee on Dredging Effectiveness examined 26 dredging projects, five of them at megasites, and evaluated whether they had attained their cleanup and risk-reduction goals.

The report was sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine and National Research Council make up the National Academies. They are private, nonprofit institutions that provide science, technology, and health policy advice under a congressional charter.

Nadeau is a national leader in working on contaminated sediment sites, and has worked on projects in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, New York and New Jersey. In addition, Nadeau founded and is the coordinating director of the Sediment Management Work Group (SMWG), an ad hoc industry group with 42 Members and 42 Sponsors, whose mission is to advocate risk-based approaches for managing contaminated sediment.

Chambers USA 2007 Recognizes Blank Rome’s Leading Practices and Attorneys
Blank Rome’s practice groups and attorneys increased their rankings—yet again—in the 2007 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Chambers USA recognized our practices groups in 11 categories this year, and also ranked 24 of our attorneys as “leaders in their fields.”

We received national rankings in Government Relations and in three categories of Transportation (Shipping). In addition, we were recognized in both Pennsylvania and Delaware in Bankruptcy/Restructuring, and were also ranked in Pennsylvania in Banking & Finance, Corporate/M&A & Private Equity, Labor & Employment, Litigation: General Commercial, and Real Estate.

The qualities on which rankings are assessed include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment, and other qualities most valued by the client.

Chambers & Partners, the UK-based publishers of Chambers USA, conduct research by speaking to a vast range of lawyers and their clients (i.e., commercial users of legal services). In-depth interviews with clients and with attorneys are done, each one lasting about half an hour. For the current U.S. directory, over 14,000 of these interviews were conducted, covering the whole of the U.S.A. They were carried out by a team of over 40 full-time researchers over a period of 6 months.

Greater weighting is given to the views of the clients, and any biased viewpoints tend to cancel each other out. All interviews are conducted purely for research purposes and are entirely confidential and un-attributed. The methodology for the research into the strengths and reputations of U.S. attorneys has been approved by the British Market Research Bureau.

The rankings and editorial comment about attorneys are independent and objective. Inclusion in this section of the guide is based solely on the research team's findings. Chambers is widely viewed among the most highly respected publications in the world that rate lawyers, in part because inclusion cannot be purchased.
