Smith Moore Adds to Raleigh Litigation Team
Smith Moore LLP has added a new attorney to its Raleigh office, continuing the growth that has expanded the firm's ranks by nearly one-fourth over the past six months. Kelly Ensslin is the newest addition to Smith Moore; she joins the Litigation practice area in Raleigh.

A graduate of the North Carolina Central University School of Law, Ensslin is a former North Carolina Magistrate in Judicial District 15B, has worked as law clerk to U.S. Magistrate Judge William Webb and was an attorney for Lenovo, Inc. in Research Triangle Park. "With her background related to federal litigation and business law on the corporate side, Kelly immediately deepens Smith Moore's capabilities in business litigation," said Mark Finkelstein, a partner in Smith Moore's litigation practice area. "Defense of white collar crime allegations, professional licensing issues and resolution of business disputes are areas where demand for Smith Moore's services are growing, and Kelly's practice will involve each of those areas."

Ensslin said, "I am truly excited about the opportunity to work with attorneys who are as widely respected as my new colleagues at Smith Moore. I could not dream of a better situation in which to develop my practice."

For decades, Mintz Levin employees have worked widely varied reduced and/or flexible hours and telecommuting schedules as well as participated in job sharing arrangements. Attorneys at every level have worked part-time and other flexible schedules and several associates and counsel have been elevated to partner status while working part-time.

In addition, the firm provides numerous benefits to assist attorneys in blending family and work responsibilities. The firm offers backup childcare and generous parenting leaves: 12 weeks of fully paid leave for birth mothers and eight weeks of fully paid leave for fathers and non-birth mothers. Attorneys may take four weeks of paid vacation time after their paid leave and may also take an extended unpaid parenting leave of up to one year, during which they may continue to participate in the firm's health insurance plan. The firm also extends its benefits to spousal equivalents or domestic partners.

Commitment to Women-Oriented Causes

Since 1990, trained attorneys and paraprofessionals in several Mintz Levin offices have represented hundreds of domestic violence and sexual assault victims who seek protective orders and other legal remedies each year. In addition to representing individual clients, the firm has provided national and statewide legislative and amicus brief advocacy on behalf of statewide and national coalitions. The firm also represents a variety of nonprofits dedicated to eradicating domestic violence in corporate, employment and governance matters.

Mintz Levin also acts as general counsel to the Washington, D.C.-based National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), an organization dedicated to ensuring that legislation and public policy are responsive to the needs of victims of domestic violence, and the NNEDV Fund, its sister non-profit organization. Mintz Levin provides a wide range of legal support to NNEDV and the NNEDV Fund, including corporate affairs, contract negotiation and, most prominently, litigation support in the various adversarial proceedings in which NNEDV is involved.

In addition, Mintz Levin attorneys participate in the Battered Immigrant Women's Project and WEAVE, which assist battered immigrant women and children on a pro bono basis in obtaining immigrant status under the Violence Against Women Act.

K&L Gates Honored by Working Mother Magazine as Top Law Firm for Women
Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP (K&L Gates) was honored among the best law firms for women by Working Mother magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC this month, in their first-ever “2007 Best Law Firms for Women” list.

According to Working Mother, more than 40 percent of law school graduates are women, but only 16 percent make it to equity partnership, with the challenges of balancing career and family often cited as a reason. The “Best Law Firms for Women” honor recognizes firms for their work/life and women-friendly policies. The top 50 winning firms were selected using an application process that evaluated six areas of importance: workforce profile, benefits and compensation, parental leave, child care, flexibility, and the retention and advancement of women.

“I am proud to be at a progressive firm that recognizes talented women and strives to accommodate their needs,” said Susan Fried, K&L Gates’ Chief Officer of Human Relations. “We will continue to raise the bar and refine policies that support our changing workforce and the realities of today’s business.”

K&L Gates’ selection was based largely on its Balanced Hours program and parental leave policies. The Balanced Hours program provides individually tailored schedules, often involving reduced hours or remote working arrangements. Lawyers participating in the program remain eligible for benefits and partnership, and may continue to work balanced hours after a promotion. In addition, the firm’s parental leave policy is effective immediately upon hire and includes six weeks of benefits and pay as if the individual were actively employed.

“Women make up 32.8 percent of K&L Gates lawyers and 49.6 percent of our associate population,” said Peter Kalis, K&L Gates’ Chairman and Global Managing Partner. “This recognition validates our commitment to work/life issues and, more importantly, our efforts towards retaining some of the best talent in the legal profession.”
