Work & Hours: Desperately wants the big, high-profile cases and clients but, with the exception of the antitrust group, doesn't have the firepower to get them.
Salary & Benefits:  Like any big firm.
The Interview process:  Deceptive. Numerous associates feel they were sold a bill of goods.
Overall Impression:  The firm is run by a bunch of coddled, self-satisfied, inexperienced liars. Run, don't walk.

A new initiative from the leading advocates for work-life balance and women-friendly policies, Best Law Firms for Women honors 50 winning firms for their commitment to the retention and advancement of female talent.

In 2006, the Committee launched the “Opt-In Project,” a nationwide, cross-industry initiative to explore ways to retain and advance women in the workplace. The Opt-In Project sponsored a series of programs between May 2006 and May 2007 that featured prominent women in different industries across the country. As part of these programs, the participants held roundtable discussions where they were able to share ideas and solutions. The Opt-In Project issued a report that summarized the observations gathered over the year-long study and proposed suggestions for addressing work structure issues that affect the retention and advancement of women in the workplace.

Heller Ehrman was recently named one of America’s Top Companies for Women by PINK magazine and KPMG, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, in PINK’s August-September issue. Heller Ehrman was the only law firm to make the list.

Methodology: The application and evaluation process for the 2007 Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firms for Women initiative was developed in a partnership by Working Mother magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC and based on Working Mother’s annual 100 Best Companies, a groundbreaking initiative that was first introduced in 1986, that continues to set the standard for family-friendly workplaces. To apply for the Best Law Firms for Women, Heller Ehrman provided detailed information on the issues that are most important to the retention and promotion of women lawyers in six measured areas: workforce profile, benefits and compensation, parental leave, childcare, flexibility, and retention and advancement of women.

Heller Ehrman LLP has been selected by the State Bar of California as recipient of the 2007 President’s Pro Bono Service Award in the Distinguished Pro Bono Category. The award will be given at a special awards reception during the 2007 State Bar Annual Meeting on September 28.

Established in 1983 by the State Bar Board of Governors, the President’s Pro Bono Service Awards recognize California attorneys who have provided or enabled the direct provision of legal services to poor persons or to organizations whose primary purpose is to provide legal services to the poor without expectation of compensation from the client.

Heller Ehrman was selected to receive the award for its work in the case of Kincaid, et al. v. City of Fresno, a civil rights action brought in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, which opposes the City of Fresno’s practice of conducting “clean-up” practices in areas where homeless people live. The case challenges Fresno's practice of "cleaning up" by destroying property of homeless people who were not present during clean up or were unable to move their belongings. City attorneys claimed the destruction was unavoidable because the homeless "abandoned" their property, leaving it unattended and that health hazards prevented workers from preserving it.

In November 2006, the District Court granted a preliminary injunction, prohibiting the City of Fresno from seizing and immediately destroying property of homeless people, pending a final judgment. The judge found that the city's practices violated the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, the California Constitution and California statutory law. On July 30, 2007, the Court certified the case as a class action on behalf of all homeless people in Fresno whose property was destroyed by the defendants. A trial of the case is scheduled for May, 2008.

“The result in the Kincaid case raises important constitutional issues regarding the property and rights of homeless people,” says Kit A. Pierson, Chair of Heller Ehrman’s Community Services Committee. “The firm is grateful for the dedication our attorneys and staff have brought to this important matter, and we are honored to be recognized by the California Bar Association for these efforts.”
