Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's New York Office Ranks Highly with Summer Associates
New York, NY - in an annual survey of summer associates by The American Lawyer, Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP's New York office ranked 6th out of 80 firms surveyed. The survey, which was conducted nationwide and divided according to major metropolitan areas, queried summer associates about their experiences working at their respective firms in terms of what they learned, their quality of life, and the likelihood they would return to the firm if asked to come on as a first-year. Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw has reported that nearly all of the students who participated in the 2006 summer program have accepted their offers of permanent employment with the firm for next Fall.

"We strive to provide our summer associates an environment in which they feel like part of a team and learn first-hand what it's like being an attorney at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw," said Brian Trust, Partner-in-Charge of the firm's New York office. "It's important to look out for the next generation of attorneys; there's only so much you can learn in law school and we try to fill in the holes by providing these students with first-hand experience and guidance."

The firm's summer program is intended to give students a realistic idea of the full range of a lawyer's activities at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw. The firm is known for allowing summer associates substantial freedom to choose work in those areas of practice that interest them and strives to take summer associates out of their offices by providing them with frequent opportunities to observe court proceedings and to participate in closings, client conferences, and negotiation sessions.

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's mentor program provides summer associates with a strong network of resources for daily questions and guidance by pairing each summer associate with a junior associate and with a partner. Senior associates further strengthen the mentoring program by working directly with the mentors to assure that each summer associate has a positive experience. The summer associates' performance is evaluated informally on a project basis as well as formally through the mid-summer and end-of-summer review discussions, providing them with many opportunities for feedback and growth.

"Our feedback from the summer associates indicated that across the board, their associate mentors were extremely attentive and helpful throughout the program," said Lauren Goldman, a partner on the Hiring Committee. "The associates gave the summers a great deal of day-to-day guidance on assignments and office life, and they participated enthusiastically in the evening social events."

In addition to more than a dozen in-house training and professional development events over the course of the summer, Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw also hosts a variety of social events designed to enable summer associates to sample some of the cultural and other activities available in New York City as well as to help summer associates get to know each other, New York office lawyers, and the lawyers from the firm's other offices. The firm recognizes that summer associates enjoy a slightly different play/work ratio than do typical practicing lawyers, but makes every effort to integrate them into the challenging work environment so that they are able to make an informed decision about working at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw.

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw is among the largest law firms in the world with more than 1,400 lawyers practicing in seven U.S. cities (Chicago, Charlotte, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, and Washington) and six European cities (Berlin, Brussels, Cologne, Frankfurt, London, and Paris).
