Nixon Peabody Expands Public Finance Practice in New England; Firm with One of Largest Public Finance Practices in the Country Attracts Veteran Public Finance Attorney to Its Boston Office
Boston, MA. Nixon Peabody LLP announces the further expansion of its public finance practice with the addition of Peter Johnson as a partner in Boston. Mr. Johnson is an established finance attorney with nearly twenty-four years’ experience in both public and corporate finance.

He joins one of the most active public finance practices in the country. In 2005, Nixon Peabody’s public finance practice was ranked as the second most active underwriters’ counsel in the U.S. and the ninth most active bond counsel, and as the number one most active underwriters’ counsel in Massachusetts. The firm served as counsel to clients whose projects were recognized as “Deals of the Year” by The Bond Buyer and Project Finance magazine in 2005. Mr. Johnson’s arrival represents the accomplishment of another step in Nixon Peabody’s national strategy to add depth and breadth to its public finance practice, particularly in markets such as New England where the firm seeks to continue its aggressive growth and expand its service to clients. The arrival of Mr. Johnson comes on the heels of Nixon Peabody’s recent announcement of a strategic alliance with OmniCap Group LLC, an agreement that provides clients with immediate access to a full range of legal and tax services in the public finance sector.

Arthur McMahon, leader of the Public Finance practice at Nixon Peabody, said, “Peter Johnson is a seasoned public and corporate finance attorney with stellar credentials. The addition of Peter to our Boston office ensures that we can continue to serve the public finance needs of clients across New England with top notch legal experience, innovation and service. Following on our recent growth in California, the addition of Peter further advances our goal to be a national leader in the public finance community with strong local presences in major regional markets. Nixon Peabody is pleased to welcome Peter to our firm and public finance practice.”

In New England, Nixon Peabody’s public finance practice achieved high visibility when it was selected as underwriters’ counsel on the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s inaugural $2.5 billion bond issue in 2005 and on the Commonwealth’s financing for the Boston, Worcester, and Springfield convention centers in 2004. The group has grown its Massachusetts practice to include financings for the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts School Building Authority, the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency, the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency, the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority, the Massachusetts Water Pollution Abatement Trust, and the New Bedford Housing Agency.

Mr. Johnson is experienced in all aspects of public finance, including bond counsel, issuer’s counsel, underwriter’s counsel, purchaser’s counsel, and borrower’s counsel for transactions which have included transportation, single and multifamily housing, and health and education facilities bonds. Mr. Johnson has worked on transactions for industrial and commercial enterprises and nursing homes, various forms of credit enhancement, including letters of credit and insurance, pooled issues, variable rate demand bonds, derivative products, and advance and current refunding. He also has experience in tax-exempt leases and the restructuring of defaulted bonds. Mr. Johnson also advises both public and private companies on all areas of general corporate law. He has represented companies in a variety of industries including hospitality, staffing, manufacturing, and health care. Mr. Johnson’s general corporate law experience includes business planning, corporate finance, public and private placement of equity and debt instruments, mergers and acquisitions, secured and unsecured lendings, and other commercial transactions.

Mr. Johnson joined Nixon Peabody from McCarter & English, LLP (which recently merged with Gadsby Hannah LLP). Prior to that, he was a partner at Gaston & Snow.

Harry Gonso Rejoins Ice Miller LLP
Gonso to Lead the Firm's Life Sciences Practice

Indianapolis – Former Ice Miller partner, Harry L. Gonso, will return to Ice Miller in mid-December to resume the practice of law. Gonso completed his two-year service commitment to Governor Mitch Daniels as his Senior Counsel and Chief of Staff today.

Gonso will rejoin the firm as a partner in the corporate practice group and lead the life sciences practice. “These past two years have been a tremendous experience. The Governor is doing his best to help this State be better, and to be involved and help him on the front line has been both a privilege and a true growth experience,” Gonso said. “My helping hand will always be there for the Governor, now I’ll just be doing different things. He started as an old friend and now he’s a better friend,” Gonso added.

Governor Daniels said, “There’s no way I can thank Harry Gonso enough, so I hope other Hoosiers will help me. He gave two years of incredibly hard work to this state at great personal sacrifice.” He went on to say, “Few of the changes and reforms that have come to Indiana would have happened without him. I wish I could have kept Harry here every day of my own service, but I’m grateful to have had him at my side as long as I did.”

Gonso was a partner at Ice Miller from 1980 to 2005 when he took early retirement to serve the Governor. Gonso’s return to Ice Miller was cleared by the State Ethics Commission on November 9, 2006. He will not engage in executive branch lobbying for one year.

Hunton & Williams Congressional Investigations and Hearings Practice
In the wake of the 2006 elections, new congressional committee leaders have identified a number of issues and industries for intensified oversight and investigation, including energy and environment, tax, government procurement, and medicare/medicaid. Hunton Williams lawyers have extensive experience with congressional investigatory and adversarial proceedings and related discovery, substantive knowledge of our clients’ businesses, and a reputation for discreet and effective risk management.
The Hunton & Willliams Congressional Investigations Team includes Capitol Hill veterans from both sides of the aisle with significant experience in congressional investigations and hearings, including former Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and the House Energy and Commerce Committee, a former U.S. assistant attorney general, former federal prosecutors, and a former member of Congress. In conjunction with its bipartisan lobbying force in the nation’s capital, our team has handled many high-profile controversies involving congressional investigations, hearings and related Inspector General investigations, as well as internal corporate investigations for a wide variety of clients. A congressional investigation can destroy the public image and equity value a corporation has spent years building. The time to engage counsel is before subpoenas have been issued and hearings have been announced. Advance preparation is essential, including litigation support, political strategy, and media crisis counselling. Our team is available to consult with companies likely to be subjected to congressional scrutiny. Hunton & Williams attorneys have defended numerous clients in mediaintensive congressional investigations, including most recently:
‡ defending a coalition of major companies
facing U.S. Senate investigation
of energy tax credits;
‡ representing companies in response
to a congressional investigation of
disaster relief government contracting;
‡ defending a former major league
baseball player in investigative hearings
involving performance-enhancing
drugs in baseball; and
‡ assisting a major technology
company in an investigative hearing
on privacy issues.

Hinshaw Attorneys Honored as "Super Lawyers" and "Rising Stars" in Wisconsin
Three Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP attorneys, Randal N. Arnold, Michael P. Malone and Tomislav Z. Kuzmanovic, all in Hinshaw's Milwaukee, Wisconsin office, have been honored by Law & Politics’ publication, Wisconsin Super Lawyers and Rising Stars 2006, as Super Lawyers. This designation places them in the top 5% of all licensed attorneys in the State of Wisconsin.

Mr. Malone, the Partner-in-Charge of Hinshaw's Milwaukee office, was further honored by being named as one of the "Top 50 Super Lawyers" in the State of Wisconsin. In addition, Mr. Kuzmanovic was profiled as the subject of "A Small Part to Play," an article in the magazine describing his litigation practice and his human rights work on behalf of independent Croatia.

In addition, Hinshaw associates, Peter J. Carman and Deric P. DuQuaine, both in the firm's Appleton, Wisconsin office have been named as 2006 Rising Stars, an honor reserved for the top 2.5% of up and coming Wisconsin attorneys under the age of 40.

More than 11,000 Wisconsin attorneys received ballots asking them to nominate the best attorneys that they had personally seen in action. Point values were then assigned for each vote, with more emphasis placed on votes from outside an attorney’s firm. Nominees are split into more than 50 areas of practice, and the members of each area of practice with the highest total number of points form a “blue ribbon panel” which reviews and gives points to the nominees from each primary practice area. In addition to the balloting process, Law & Politics conducts further research to identify the top lawyers in different areas, reviewing peer recognition, professional achievement, and the discipline record of nominated attorneys.

The point totals from the general survey, research process and blue ribbon panel review were added to arrive at a final point total for each candidate.
