International Arbitration Lawyer James Castello Joins LeBoeuf Lamb’s Paris Office
LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae announces that James Castello has joined its Paris office as senior counsel. James will work closely with arbitration specialist Eric Schwartz who heads the international arbitration practice in LeBoeuf Lamb's Paris office.

James has advised and represented clients in a wide range of legal disputes, particularly international arbitrations (both institutional and ad hoc). Clients in such disputes or proceedings have been based primarily throughout Europe, in the United States and Mexico. Recent matters in which he has been involved have ranged from large infrastructure or commercial projects to a failed commodity purchase to a contested privatization of leased government property.

For the past six years, James has also served on the United States' delegation to the Working Group on Arbitration at the U. N. Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). During those years, the Working Group has completed significant revisions in the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, has drafted the new Model Law on International Commercial Conciliation, and has begun a project to update the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. James speaks regularly on arbitration topics, particularly those related to the UNCITRAL Model Law and Rules, and has made presentations at conferences sponsored by many of the major arbitral institutions.

James was formerly counsel in the international arbitration group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, based in Vienna. Prior to that, James practiced in the litigation department of Shearman & Sterling in Washington, D.C, focusing on international matters. Between his time at Freshfields and Shearman & Sterling, James left private practice to serve for nearly six years in senior legal positions in the Clinton Administration. These posts included Deputy Counsel to the President, at the White House, and Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Justice Department, where his portfolio encompassed such international issues as immigration and human rights.

At the beginning of his legal career, James served as law clerk to Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., on the U.S. Supreme Court and to Judge Abner J. Mikva on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He also worked as a legal assistant to Judge Howard Holtzmann, on the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal at The Hague, The Netherlands. James received his B.A. degree from Yale University and an M.A. (Econ.) and J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He is admitted to practice in New York and Washington, D.C.

"James' arrival reinforces the growing international arbitration practice in the Paris office. We are delighted to welcome him to the firm," said Yves Huyghé de Mahenge, managing partner of the Paris office.

LeBoeuf Lamb Chairman Steven H. Davis added, "International arbitration is a key practice area for our firm. We are pleased to have James join this practice group and expand the service to our clients in this area.

Heller Ehrman Adds Competition Lawyer to Growing London Office
Continuing the growth of its new London office, Heller Ehrman LLP announces that Douglas Lahnborg, a competition lawyer from Slaughter and May, is joining the firm as a shareholder. Lahnborg’s addition comes on the heels of Heller Ehrman’s hiring of three prominent emerging company and technology corporate lawyers from WilmerHale in London. Lahnborg has considerable experience and expertise in major UK and European Commission (EC) merger transactions, antitrust investigations and in counseling leading firms in Europe.

Lahnborg will be joining Edward P. (Ted) Henneberry, co-chairman of Heller Ehrman’s European Practice Group, who is relocating to London. Henneberry was a Member of the Irish Competition Authority before joining Heller, and is one of only a handful of US antitrust lawyers who has served in a senior post in an EU competition agency.

“Douglas’s experience will be a tremendous complement to Ted’s background and familiarity with the European competition and regulatory climate,” said Matthew Larrabee, Heller Ehrman’s chairman. “I am very excited that our London presence is taking shape so well.”

“Entry to the European Union is a necessary component for Heller Ehrman to establish and grow a competition practice, which, in addition to corporate and real estate private equity, will be one of the cornerstones of our London operation,” said Henneberry. “Our clients are increasingly facing complex antitrust issues common to both the EU and the US, and Douglas’ experience in major UK and EC cases greatly enhances our capabilities. I am quite excited that we are able to expand our practice with someone of his calibre and training.”

Throughout his legal career, Lahnborg has gained impressive experience in competition law. His experience includes a trainee stint with the European Commission’s Merger Task Force and a one-year secondment to Davis Polk & Wardwell, where he received training in US antitrust laws. In 1998, he joined Slaughter and May, where he has advised clients on all aspects of EU and UK competition law, including the EC Merger Regulation and the UK Enterprise Act 2002. Lahnborg also has experience in advising on Articles 81/82 of the Rome Treaty and Chapters I/II of the UK Competition Act 1998, and in handling compliance reviews, advising on cartels and developing EU-wide distribution and supply strategies.

Lahnborg earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the London School of Economics, where he focused on competition and international business law. He received a law degree from University of Stockholm, graduating cum laude.

With more than 80 lawyers in its Antitrust and Trade Regulation practice, Heller Ehrman is ranked among the top 20 largest competition practices worldwide by the Global Competition Review and PLC Cross Border magazines. The firm’s Antitrust practice was recently ranked No. 2 in the US by Competition Law 360, based on the number of antitrust defense cases in which the firm was retained in 2006. Heller Ehrman is the only firm in the US with antitrust lawyers recommended by Global Competition Review in all three of the major US antitrust centres: New York, Washington, D.C., and California. Lawyers in the firm’s Antitrust and Trade Regulation practice represent clients across several industries, including companies in the software, financial services, retail, food manufacturing and processing, pharmaceutical, energy, life sciences/healthcare, telecommunications, digital media, entertainment, aerospace, and oil and gas sectors.

“I am impressed with Heller Ehrman’s clients and its reputation in antitrust and competition law," Lahnborg said. “I am excited to play a part in the launch of the firm’s London office and look forward to aiding in its expansion efforts.”

Heller Ehrman has arranged to lease office space at 30 St. Mary Axe, which is also known as the Gherkin building, in the City of London. When the London office opens in March 2007, it will be the firm’s fourth outside of the US. Heller Ehrman has three offices in Asia, including Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.
