Fred Werdine Selected to Participate in Leadership Tampa
Fred S. Werdine, a shareholder with the law firm of Fowler White Boggs Banker, has been selected to participate in the 2008 class of Leadership Tampa. Leadership Tampa, a program of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, educates its participants on issues, opportunities, and challenges in Tampa and Hillsborough County and develops community leaders.

Mr. Werdine concentrates his practice in the area of eminent domain, condemnation, inverse condemnation and property rights.

Fowler White Attorney President Elect of Hillsborough County Bar Association
Thomas R. Bopp, a shareholder with the law firm of Fowler White Boggs Banker, has been elected President-Elect of the Board of Directors of the Hillsborough County Bar Association.

Mr. Bopp practices in the firm’s Litigation Department and concentrates his practice in all areas of personal injury and first party property damage litigation with emphasis in defending fraudulent property damage claims.

James S. Rosenfeld appointed to the DMBA Board of Directors
Butzel Long attorney and shareholder James S. Rosenfeld has been appointed to a one-year term on the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Board of Directors.

Mr. Rosenfeld practices in the area of labor and employment law and he serves as co-manager of Butzel Long's Employment Litigation Practice Group. He has extensive experience in litigating a wide variety of labor and employment cases, including trial and appellate work in both state and federal court. He also negotiates collective bargaining agreements, and handles labor arbitrations as well as matters before the National Labor Relations Board.

Mr. Rosenfeld previously served as a member of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly and President of the Barristers of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. He is a Life Member in the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference and a member of the Fellows of the State Bar of Michigan Foundation. He is a member of the Labor and Employment Law and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections of the State Bar and the Labor and Employment Relations Sections of the Federal and American Bar Associations. He has completed Michigan's ICLE 40 hour General Civil Case Mediator Training and has been a mediator on the American Arbitration Association Mediation Panel.

Mr. Rosenfeld has served as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School teaching alternative dispute resolution and frequently lectures and conducts training for employers and supervisors on various employment issues. He has co-authored "Expert Witness Testimony: A Litigation Issue for Discharge and Discrimination Cases," February, 1993, 72 Michigan Bar Journal, No. 2, 146 and "Sex Harassment Decisions: Take Your Statute as You Find It," October 1998, 77 Michigan Bar Journal, No. 10, 1098.

Mr. Rosenfeld is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., 1986) and Harvard College (A.B., 1981, magna cum laude). He is a resident of Huntington Woods.

About the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association

The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association (DMBA) was established in 1836 by a group of prominent Detroit area attorneys. Its purpose was to create a forum that would allow lawyers and judges to improve the administration and quality of justice in their community through education, dialogue, and community activities. The DMBA currently serves the legal community of southeastern Michigan by providing services, products, and information essential to the successful, ethical practice of law.


Attorneys Speak at NYU's Summer Institute in Taxation
Bryan Cave LLP New York Partner John Barrie and Counsel Alan Appel will address CFOs, tax directors of major U.S. corporations and CPAs at the upcoming New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies Summer Institute in Taxation conference. Speakers include top tax attorneys from firms nationwide.

Barrie will address the state and local tax section of the conference. He will speak on FIN 48 and discuss issues of interest to state and local tax professionals. The Financial Accounting Standards Board recently issued FASB Interpretation No.48, which sets specific rules governing financial accounting for uncertain income tax positions. Under FIN 48, there are specific guidelines for how that additional tax now is calculated.

Appel will speak at the advanced international tax sections of the conference for the third year in a row. He will discuss cross border real estate investing.

This intensive tax conference takes place July 16-27 at The Westin New York at Times Square.

Barrie’s practice focuses solely in the areas of federal and state tax controversy and transactional matters. He represents individuals and business entities in federal and state tax controversy matters. His transactional practice includes representing public and private businesses in taxable and tax-free mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, spin offs, divestitures and restructurings.

Appel specializes in domestic and international tax planning involving taxation of mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, joint ventures, limited liability companies and tax controversy matters. Appel is the vice chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Tax Section Committee on U.S. Activities of Foreigners and Tax Treaties.


Ben Moncrief Named "Top 40 Under 40"
Bradley Arant Rose & White LLP is pleased to announce that Benjamin "Ben" M. Moncrief, an associate in the Birmingham office, has been recognized as one of the Birmingham Business Journal's "Top 40 Under 40". Ben is a member of the Litigation Practice Group and focuses on the representation of defendants in complex, multi-party litigation and of both plaintiffs and defendants in commercial and business disputes.

Apart from practicing law, Ben participates in several community activities and organizations. He presently serves as a volunteer “Big” and as a member of the Young Advisor Board for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Birmingham. Additionally, Ben is the current President of the Rotaract Club of Birmingham.


Paul Hastings Forms Cross-Practice Subprime Mortgage Group
In response to the recent developments in the subprime mortgage market, Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker LLP (Paul Hastings), a leading international law firm, announced the formation of a cross-practice subprime mortgage group.

This newly formed group advises companies on the risks and potential liabilities in the subprime mortgage market and helps them navigate the evolving landscape. The group is made up of attorneys from Paul Hastings leading bankruptcy and restructuring, real estate and litigation practices.

O'Melveny Represents Fabrus in Pfizer Incubator Deal
O'Melveny & Myers LLP recently represented Fabrus LLC, a developer of novel antibody libraries, in its agreement with Pfizer Inc. to become the first tenant in the new Pfizer Incubator in La Jolla, CA. The Pfizer Incubator offers scientist-entrepreneurs the opportunity to bring their medical innovations to patients by providing under one roof many of the necessary resources to help convert concepts into products.

The O'Melveny & Myers team was led by Silicon Valley's Sam Zucker and Eduardo Rivas, with Margaret Ikeya and Paul Meyer assisting on intellectual property matters.
