Butzel Long

James S. Rosenfeld appointed to the DMBA Board of Directors
Butzel Long attorney and shareholder James S. Rosenfeld has been appointed to a one-year term on the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Board of Directors.

Mr. Rosenfeld practices in the area of labor and employment law and he serves as co-manager of Butzel Long's Employment Litigation Practice Group. He has extensive experience in litigating a wide variety of labor and employment cases, including trial and appellate work in both state and federal court. He also negotiates collective bargaining agreements, and handles labor arbitrations as well as matters before the National Labor Relations Board.

Mr. Rosenfeld previously served as a member of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly and President of the Barristers of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. He is a Life Member in the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference and a member of the Fellows of the State Bar of Michigan Foundation. He is a member of the Labor and Employment Law and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections of the State Bar and the Labor and Employment Relations Sections of the Federal and American Bar Associations. He has completed Michigan's ICLE 40 hour General Civil Case Mediator Training and has been a mediator on the American Arbitration Association Mediation Panel.

Mr. Rosenfeld has served as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School teaching alternative dispute resolution and frequently lectures and conducts training for employers and supervisors on various employment issues. He has co-authored "Expert Witness Testimony: A Litigation Issue for Discharge and Discrimination Cases," February, 1993, 72 Michigan Bar Journal, No. 2, 146 and "Sex Harassment Decisions: Take Your Statute as You Find It," October 1998, 77 Michigan Bar Journal, No. 10, 1098.

Mr. Rosenfeld is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., 1986) and Harvard College (A.B., 1981, magna cum laude). He is a resident of Huntington Woods.

The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association (DMBA) was established in 1836 by a group of prominent Detroit area attorneys. Bryan Cave LLP

Attorneys Speak at NYU's Summer Institute in Taxation
Bryan Cave LLP New York Partner John Barrie and Counsel Alan Appel will address CFOs, tax directors of major U.S. corporations and CPAs at the upcoming New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies Summer Institute in Taxation conference. Speakers include top tax attorneys from firms nationwide.

Barrie will address the state and local tax section of the conference. He will speak on FIN 48 and discuss issues of interest to state and local tax professionals. The Financial Accounting Standards Board recently issued FASB Interpretation No.48, which sets specific rules governing financial accounting for uncertain income tax positions. Under FIN 48, there are specific guidelines for how that additional tax now is calculated.

Appel will speak at the advanced international tax sections of the conference for the third year in a row. He will discuss cross border real estate investing.

This intensive tax conference takes place July 16-27 at The Westin New York at Times Square.

Barrie’s practice focuses solely in the areas of federal and state tax controversy and transactional matters. He represents individuals and business entities in federal and state tax controversy matters. His transactional practice includes representing public and private businesses in taxable and tax-free mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, spin offs, divestitures and restructurings.

Appel specializes in domestic and international tax planning involving taxation of mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, joint ventures, limited liability companies and tax controversy matters. Appel is the vice chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Tax Section Committee on U.S. Activities of Foreigners and Tax Treaties.
