Gerald F. Richman Named President of American Board of Trial Advocates
Gerald F. Richman, President of the firm has been named President of the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).

ABOTA was established in 1957 in order to advocate the preservation of the civil jury system. ABOTA’s primary goals include elevating the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession, furthering the education and training of trial lawyers and promoting efficient administration of justice.

Richman, who is Board Certified by the Florida Bar, focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation with emphasis on antitrust, securities, contract, construction, federal agency, corporate, banking, civil RICO, professional liability, consumer, employment, civil rights, probate litigation and class action issues, representing both plaintiffs and defendants.

An active community leader, Richman currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Economic Council of Palm Beach County and is a member of the Criminal Justice Commission of Palm Beach County. A former President of the Florida Bar, he was previously a member of the Bar’s Board of Governors, Chair of the organization’s Professional Ethics Committee and a Director of the Florida Bar Foundation. He previously served under gubernatorial appointment and senate confirmation as Chair of the Florida Commission on Human Relations, was a member of the Community Alliance of Palm Beach County and is a former National Director of the American Judicature Society. He is currently is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a National ABOTA Board Member and a Charter Member of both the Miami chapter of ABOTA and the National Association of Consumer Advocates.

Richman’s work and contributions to the field of law have been recognized by various organizations throughout his distinguished career. While in the Defense Appellate Division of the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps in Washington, D.C., he was awarded the Presidential Service Badge for Honorable Service. Richman has been selected since 1990 for the Business Litigation section of The Best Lawyers in America and has appeared in Who’s Who in American Law since 1977. He was also named a Florida Super Lawyer in 2006 and 2007.

A resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Richman received his Juris Doctor and Bachelor’s degree in Building Construction from the University of Florida. He is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the United States District Courts for all districts of Florida, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, the United States Court of Military Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Former House Financial Services Committee Senior Counsel Todd L. Cranford Joins Patton Boggs LLP
Patton Boggs LLP is pleased to announce that Todd L. Cranford has joined the firm as Of Counsel in the Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Cranford’s practice will focus on assisting clients with Public Policy, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement, capital markets, and corporate governance-related matters.

Before joining Patton Boggs, Mr. Cranford was Senior Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services, advising Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) and other members on a breadth of substantive policy and legal issues coming before the committee. Specifically, he dealt with mutual fund reform, implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) of 2002, hedge funds, oversight of national securities exchanges, and credit rating agencies, while also focusing on market structure issues and securities arbitration.

“Todd is an exceptional addition to both our public policy and financial services groups. His depth of experience dealing with securities and financial services issues will provide our clients with a valuable insider’s perspective ensuring that their needs are effectively being addressed in Congress and the SEC”, said Stuart Pape, Firm Managing Partner.

Previously Mr. Cranford served as Senior Counsel in the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, investigating, developing, and instituting civil and administrative actions involving violations of the federal securities laws, such as insider trading, financial fraud, failure to register securities, and market manipulation.

Earlier in his career, he was a Legislative Liaison between the Office of the Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger and elected officials on local, state, and federal levels. In addition, Mr. Cranford was involved in various aspects of commercial litigation as an attorney in the New York headquarters of one of the 50 largest U.S.-based international law firms.

He held a judicial clerkship with Hon. Anna Diggs Taylor, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, from 1988 to 1990. Mr. Cranford attended Columbia University School of Law, earning a J.D. in 1988 and graduated with an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1985.

Miller Johnson Welcomes New Attorney To Firm
A local estate planning attorney has joined Miller Johnson, announced Managing Member Jeffrey S. Ammon today. Christopher M. Brown brings more than eight years of estate planning and probate experience to the firm's premiere estate planning practice group.

Mr. Brown joins Miller Johnson as a Member with a practice focusing on estate planning, guardianships and conservatorships, probate litigation and Medicaid planning. He is active with various professional associations; he serves as chair of the Grand Rapids Bar Association’s Probate Section, as a member of the Michigan Bar Association’s Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, and as a board member of the Western Michigan Estate Planning Council.

Active also in many community organizations, Mr. Brown is a member of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce’s Michigan Business Leaders for Excellence in Education initiative, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Grand Rapids program and the Kent County Sheriff’s Department’s Victims’ Services Unit. He is also a board member of Thresholds, is a Fellow in Michigan State University’s (MSU) Michigan Political Leadership Program and serves as secretary of the MSU Alumni Club of West Michigan.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University and his Juris Doctorate, summa cum laude, from the MSU College of Law. He is admitted to practice in the U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Brown is an author and frequent speaker on estate-planning topics to community groups, company-sponsored retirement planning seminars, and professional organizations. He previously practiced at Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt and Howlett.

Maslon Elects Two New Partners: Jason A. Lien and Dawn C. Van Tassel
The law firm of Maslon Edelman Borman & Brand, LLP, is pleased to announce that Jason A. Lien and Dawn C. Van Tassel have been elected as partners of the firm.

Jason A. Lien is a trial lawyer in Maslon's Litigation Group. He has successfully represented plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of complex civil litigation matters, including business tort and fraud actions, breach of contract claims, product liability cases, shareholder disputes, and medical malpractice litigation. Jason’s practice includes real estate and construction law, where he has advised owners, contractors and design professionals in construction claims, commercial landlord-tenant disputes, and mechanic’s lien actions. Jason has also handled a large number of civil and criminal appeals. Prior to joining Maslon, Jason obtained significant trial and appellate experience as an attorney in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Jason is a 1998 cum laude graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School and received a B.A. degree, cum laude, in 1994 from Hamline University.

Dawn C. Van Tassel is a trial lawyer in Maslon's Business Litigation Group, serving clients in the areas of complex commercial litigation, business torts and employment disputes. Dawn’s experience includes representing clients ranging from individuals to small-business owners to global corporations throughout all stages of state and federal court proceedings and privately arbitrated disputes. Dawn has successfully first- and second-chaired numerous bench and jury trials and arbitration hearings and has also appeared before state and federal appellate courts. Although her practice focuses primarily on complex commercial disputes, Dawn's experience spans a wide breadth of litigation matters, including insurance coverage, employment discrimination, and appellate work. She also maintains a robust local-counsel practice, guiding out-of-state lawyers and clients through the intricacies of Minnesota's state and federal courts. Dawn received her juris doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall). She earned her bachelor of arts, summa cum laude, from Augsburg College. Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed Is "Top" Area Law Firm

Brian Margolis Joins WilmerHale As Partner In Its New York Office

Elizabeth Clark Joins Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley LLP As Chair of Law Firm's Real Estate Practice Group
Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley announced today that Elizabeth Clark, who has worked extensively with clients in real estate, land use, banking and commercial transactions, has joined the firm as a Partner and Chair of the Real Estate Practice Group.

Previously with the Wendel Rosen law firm, Ms. Clark has advised investors, developers and owners on all aspects of their commercial and residential real estate portfolios, including acquisitions, financing, development, construction, leasing, and dispositions. She has extensive experience in real estate, land use, banking and commercial transactions with clients ranging from owners of shopping centers, subdivisions, industrial and office projects, residential condominiums and golf clubs, to international banking institutions and hotels. She has served as lender counsel for loans to public utilities, port authorities, universities and shopping centers, as well as for foreclosure actions and workouts.

Ms. Clark has received commendations for her volunteer work, including establishing and serving as supervising attorney for the Low Income Eviction Project for Landlords for the Alameda County Volunteer Legal Services Corporation. She received the Individual Distinguished Service Award in 2006 from the Alameda County Bar Association and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2004 and Mentor of the Year in 2006 by the Alameda County Volunteer Legal Services Corporation.

Prior to relocating to California, Ms. Clark represented a wide array of international clients while partner at the U.S. Virgin Islands law firm Dudley, Clark & Chan. While there, she was president of the Virgin Islands Bar Association and served as a faculty member at the University of the Virgin Islands, where she taught real property law and legal research. Before deciding to pursue a law career, Ms. Clark served as chief of staff for New York State Senator Franz S. Leichter.

Ms. Clark is admitted to the State Bar of California, the New York State Bar and the U.S. Virgin Islands Bar.

She received a B.A. in political science cum laude from Hunter College of the City University of New York and a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law.
