E-Recording Goes Live - New Technology Provides Potential for Faster Service
Attorney David Ford and Paralegal Angey Nicol of the Law Firm of Hutchens, Senter & Britton joined North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall at the Johnston County Courthouse

Thursday morning to usher in a new era in document recording. Ford demonstrated the first live electronic recording (eRecording) of a legal document under North Carolina’s recently approved Electronic Recording Council rules.

Following passage of a new law in January, North Carolina became the first state in the nation to offer electronic notarization. The new technology was developed to save the public time and money, allowing cost-effective electronic filing of documents that typically were sent through regular mail or courier

Ford, who completed additional training to be authorized as an e-notary, says the electronic recording of documents with the Register of Deeds will benefit clients.

“Advancements in technology create opportunities to increase efficiency” says Ford, “When we understand and embrace these advancements, we are better prepared to serve our clients.”

Only currently commissioned notaries can become electronic notaries by taking additional training to earn their e-notary certification.

Stevens & Lee Partners With Leading Regional Insurance Risk Consulting Firm
Stevens & Lee announced today its partnership with Pinnacle Risk Services, Inc., one of the region’s leading insurance risk consulting firms. Pinnacle provides professional risk consulting services to risk managers and others charged with the protection of their company’s assets, primarily CEOs, CFOs, Board Chairpersons and General Counsel.

“We’re extremely pleased to have Pinnacle join the Stevens & Lee team,” said Jeanna Hahn, Stevens & Lee spokesperson. “We’ve worked on engagements with Pinnacle in the past and have been impressed with the breadth of its risk management expertise, particularly in its gap analysis product for corporate insurance programs.”

“We look forward to offering this and other value-added risk management services to our institutional clients,” said Ms. Hahn.

“Pinnacle’s partnership with Stevens & Lee gives us access to the breadth and depth of services provided by a leader among law firms in the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Kenneth M. Maher, Managing Principal of Pinnacle Risk Services, Inc.

“It also allows our firms to work seamlessly with clients in helping them understand the risks associated with Directors & Officers, Professional and Employment Practices Liability,” said Mr. Maher, “and to see that their insurance programs address the needs of the corporation, as well as the individual directors and officers who can be held personally liable in some instances.”

One of Pinnacle’s many value-added services is to provide an independent and objective review of a client’s corporate insurance programs to identify gaps in coverage that can make the difference between whether a claim is insured or not.

“All too often we find gaps in coverage or key words or sections of a insurance contract that need to be amended to either broaden coverage or minimize an exclusion that could result in an unfunded loss,” said Mr. Maher.

Pinnacle has particular expertise in property and casualty insurance, namely professional liability insurance, including D&O and E&O insurance, employment practices and fiduciary liability, and in merger and acquisition due diligence in the insurance risk management area. The company also works closely with clients to develop insurance solutions to address representations and warranties in sales agreements that benefit both the buyer and the seller.

Flaster/Greenberg Joins Elite List of “Top Trademark Firms”
Flaster/Greenberg's Intellectual Property Practice Group's Trademark and Copyright Section was recently featured in Intellectual Property Today 's list of “Top Trademark Firms” found in the May 2007 edition of the magazine.

Over a three-year period, from 2004-2006, Flaster/Greenberg increased the annual number of trademarks registered to its clients with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from four in 2004 to an all-time high of 155 in 2006. This marks an astounding 3,000 percent increase in the number of registrations issued -- the largest percentage of growth of any firm listed.

The meteoric rise in filings speaks to the growing Intellectual Property Practice Group that added Jordan LaVine, head of the firm's Trademark and Copyright section, in 2006. For 2006, the firm ranked 67 th out of the 169 firms included in the ranking.

Regionally, the number of registrations issued to Flaster/Greenberg's clients put it virtually on par with much larger regional competitors such as Wolf Block, Schorr, and Solis-Cohen and within striking distance of mammoth national firms such as Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker.
