NMM Women's Forum to Sponsor Somerset County "Girls on the Run" Race
Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A. is pleased to announce that the NMM Women’s Forum has pledged its support to the Somerset County Girls On the Run (GOTR) race to be held on June 11, 2007. The race will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Duke Island Park, located on Old York Road in Bridgewater, New Jersey.

The NMM Women’s Forum is a platinum-level financial sponsor for this race and several NMM Women’s Forum members will volunteer on race day to asisst with the race activities.

“The NMM Women’s Forum and the GOTR program share the goal of fostering an atmosphere where women can utilize their individual talents and abilities to become leaders in their communities. Therefore, it seems fitting that the Forum sponsor this race. We feel that these girls are tomorrow’s leaders,” said GOTR Race Committee and NMM Women’s Forum Member Deanna Koestel.

Girls on the Run is a program for girls in grades 3-5 which strives to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The ten-week program culminates with the girls running a 5K race. The program currently serves more than 500 girls in the Somerset County area and continues to grow. Former Baltimore Assistant Solicitor Joins Nelson Mullins in Greenville
A former Baltimore assistant solicitor has joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP, bringing her litigation skills to the Firm's Greenville office.

Cary Berkeley Kaye, a former assistant solicitor for the City of Baltimore, joins the Firm as an associate and will practice in the areas of business and pharmaceutical, employment, appellate, and immigration litigation.

While in Baltimore, her practice included a variety of general and appellate litigation, and she also worked with the Advice and Counsel Division. From 2002 to 2004, she was a fellow with the Appellate Litigation Clinic of the Georgetown University Law Center, where she supervised students, practicing chiefly before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and D.C. Circuits and the Board of Immigration Appeals.

A member of the bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia, she is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and D.C. Circuits and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

Ms. Kaye served as a law clerk to Senior Judge Joseph H. Young of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and to Judge Diana Gribbon Motz of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

In 2000, Ms. Kaye earned a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. While in law school, she served on the Admissions Committee and as an editor of the Yale Law Journal, as a Coker Fellow teaching in a first-year torts class, and as vice president of grants for the Initiative for Public Interest Law at Yale. Ms. Kaye earned a Master of Philosophy degree in Economics in 1997 and a Diploma in Economics in 1995 from the University of Cambridge, England. In 1993, Ms. Kaye earned a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Nelson Mullins Ranked by Two Legal Referral Firms
The Legal 500 US has ranked Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough as among the top third most recommended law firms in the Product Liability and Mass Tort Defense (pharmaceuticals and medical devices) category in its Volume III: Litigation. Also, the BTI Power Rankings: The BTI Client Relationship Scorecard for Law Firms has named The Firm as a market leader based on client feedback.

The Legal 500, a law firm referral guide that bases its listings on client interviews, also cited one of the Firm's litigation chairs, Stephen Morrison, as "extremely well-respected" and Managing Partner David Dukes as viewed as "a top-rate product liability trial and appellate lawyer."

According to the publication:

Nelson Mullins handles "product liability and mass tort cases from complex multi-district litigation to individual actions across a range of drugs, medical devices, blood products and surgical equipment. Smith Joins Firm's Environmental Practice Group
"Alexandra Smith has joined Lane Powell’s Olympia office as Counsel to the Firm in the Environmental Practice Group.

Smith’s practice focuses on environmental and natural resource regulatory issues, and appellate litigation. She has advised clients in resolving liabilities associated with contaminated sites, cleaning up contaminated properties, purchasing contaminated properties, gaining and maintaining regulatory compliance, obtaining permits and completing development projects. She has also represented clients in litigation before the Environmental Hearings Board, and state and federal trial and appellate courts.

Prior to joining Lane Powell, Smith was an Assistant Attorney General, where she was a designated appellate specialist, and represented the Department of Ecology and the Department of Natural Resources on issues related to solid, hazardous, and nuclear wastes; water and air quality; cross-border pollution; forest practices; and tribal treaty rights. She also negotiated aquatic lands leases on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources and advised the Department of Ecology as it developed recommendations for the Governor’s Puget Sound Initiative.

Smith received her J.D., with honors, from the University of Washington Law School, and her B.S., from Brown University."

Kramer Levin Represents Rain Calcining in Proposed Acquisition of CII Carbon
"Kramer Levin represented India’s Rain Calcining Limited, which manufactures calcined petroleum coke, in its proposed acquisition of U.S.-based CII Carbon, L.L.C., for $595 million in cash. The combined entity would be the world’s largest maker of calcined petroleum coke.

The transaction is expected to be completed this month.

The Kramer Levin team was led by Adam. S. Karasik, Ernest S. Wechsler, Abbe L. Dienstag and Carol Archer. The other members of the team were: John Bessonette, Anna Krasnostein, Abraham Safdie, Eric Wise and John Longobardo (Corporate); Barry Herzog and Blake Rigel (Tax): Jon Ziefert and Jason Shames (Real Estate); Avram Cahn (Employee Benefits); Kevin Moss and Leslie Nguyen (Intellectual Property); and Kerri Folb (Environmental)."

Sonnenschein Expands Biotech and Life Sciences Practice
National law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced the addition of nationally-renowned biotech attorney Dale C. Hunt and others, expanding its Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group with five new members. The individuals, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in the areas of patent law and biotechnology, will be part of the firm’s thriving Life Sciences practice.

Hunt, whose clients include start-up companies, plant breeders, universities and multinational corporations, will practice in Sonnenschein’s San Francisco office. Joining him there is senior associate Sheila R. Gibson, with whom he previously worked at Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP. Also joining the firm in San Francisco is Hal William Gibson. In addition, Sonnenschein has added senior associate Saul Zackson and scientific adviser Patricia Keller to its St. Louis Life Sciences practice.

“Dale is an outstanding biotech and life sciences patent attorney, and is a very welcome addition to our IP&T team both in the Bay Area and across the country,” said Carol Anne Been, national chair of Sonnenschein’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice Group. “Dale will be supported by our new colleagues in San Francisco, and his practice will be complemented by our other new colleagues and existing practice in St. Louis. Our new members bring a range of experience in the critical areas of patent law, agricultural biotechnology, biological science, pharmaceuticals and immunology. Together, these five individuals will provide enormous benefits for our clients.”

A frequent author, Hunt’s articles have been published in Managing Intellectual Property, National Law Journal, San Francisco Daily Journal and Plant Science. He has delivered numerous speeches and seminars and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Society of Plant Biologists and the National Association of Plant Patent Owners. The majority of Hunt’s work involves a variety of pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, plant biotechnology and clean technology projects.

“Sonnenschein’s commitment to intellectual property law, underscored by the recent office openings in key locations like Silicon Valley, Dallas and Charlotte, is very impressive, ” said Hunt. “The firm’s devotion to patent prosecution and patent-related transactions in the biotech field will provide me with a great opportunity to help my clients.”

Hunt received a J.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, San Diego. He has an M.S. degree in genetics and a B.S. degree in botany, both from Brigham Young University.

Sheila Gibson is a patent attorney whose professional experience includes working in the Gene Therapy Division of Chiron Technologies. She received a J.D. degree from the University of Southern California Law School and a B.S. degree in microbiology and molecular genetics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Gibson has practiced with Hunt for more than five years, working primarily on patent matters in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, genetics and diagnostics.

Hal Gibson is a registered patent attorney who works on biotechnology intellectual property portfolios and has helped establish a protein laboratory and purification protocols for a start-up biotech company. Mr. Gibson earned a J.D. degree from the University of San Diego School of Law and a B.S. degree in biology from California State University, San Marcos. Previously, Mr. Gibson was an associate at Krause Kalfayan Benink & Slavens, LLP.

Zackson’s work focuses on treating age-related degenerative diseases, the development of tissue regeneration, and opinions of counsel and strategic planning for university research and biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Zackson earned a J.D. degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California, Berkeley. He received a B.S. degree, cum laude, in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University.

Keller, a patent scientist who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Kansas, has spent the past 20 years as a research and patent scientist at pharmaceutical and life science companies, including G.D. Searle, Monsanto and Pharmacia. Most recently, she was an intellectual property manager at Pfizer. Keller earned an M.A. degree in immunology and microbiology from the University of Kansas and a B.A. degree in biology from the University of Missouri.
