Heller Ehrman Welcomes Prominent IP Litigator to NY Office
Joy Arnold has joined Heller Ehrman’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group as a shareholder in the New York office. Her arrival comes on the heels of the arrival of three other IP litigators with whom she has practiced for many years – Kevin Culligan, Ed Bailey and John Hanish. Arnold’s practice focuses on patent litigation in the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

“The addition of Joy represents another important step in our strategic growth in the New York market,” said Joseph T. McLaughlin, chairman of Heller Ehrman’s New York office. “Our world-class intellectual property practice is a key focus of our expansion, and we are delighted to welcome someone of Joy’s caliber to the firm.”

Like Culligan, Bailey and Hanish, Arnold joins Heller Ehrman from the New York office of King & Spalding, where she practiced since 2004. Prior to that, the quartet practiced at the intellectual property boutique of Fish & Neave. Arnold has tried cases involving the Hatch-Waxman amendments to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and the overlapping provisions of the patent laws. She also has litigated matters involving mechanical and medical devices, food products, microprocessor architecture and semiconductor packaging. Arnold earned her A.B. in biology from Brown University and her M.A. from Wesleyan University. Prior to attending law school, she was a research scientist in the Department of Cardiovascular Biochemistry of Bristol-Myers. In 1991, she received her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was an associate editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

Since the beginning of 2006, Heller Ehrman has added 14 shareholders to its New York office. Since opening in 1999, the firm’s New York office has grown from 19 to 127 lawyers. Heller Ehrman’s New York office represents clients that include financial institutions, professional service firms and Fortune 500 companies, including Allen & Company, LLC, Bank of America, Bayer, Becton Dickinson & Co., Citibank, Credit Suisse Securities, Deloitte & Touche LLP, Ernst & Young LLP, GMAC Commercial Mortgage Corp., Goldman Sachs, Jeffries & Co., JP Morgan Chase, KPMG, Philip Morris USA, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Washington Mutual.

“I am delighted that another member of one of the premier IP litigation groups on the East Coast is joining Heller Ehrman,” said Patricia Thayer, co-chair of Heller Ehrman’s Intellectual Property Litigation group. “Joy’s expertise in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors as well as her technical background and trial experience further adds to the depth of the IP Litigation Group nationwide.”

Heller Ehrman’s Intellectual Property group has approximately 90 IP litigators as well as a streak of seven straight wins in patent trials over the past three years, plus a unanimous decision in the U.S. Supreme Court. The firm’s IP clients include industry leaders such as Apple, Computer Associates, Genentech, Allergan, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Palm, QUALCOMM, Samsung, Symantec, Texas Instruments, and Yahoo! The firm’s IP litigation practice was recognized by The American Lawyer as one of the top five practices in the country. The group includes five members of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and four members recognized by Chambers USA for their IP and complex litigation capabilities.

“Joy has roots at what was once the leading IP litigation firm in the country,” said Michael Plimack, co-chair of Heller Ehrman’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group. “Her training and subsequent years of experience will be a great benefit for our sophisticated client base.”

“Heller Ehrman has one of the premier IP litigation practices in the country,” Arnold said. “The opportunity to practice at a firm with so much talent, coupled with the chance to be reunited with my colleagues, makes this an ideal move for me.”

Eckert Seamans Attorney Receives Pro Bono Award from Pennsylvania Bar Association
The national law firm Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC today announced that attorney Sarah L. Shannon received a 2007 Pro Bono Award from the Pennsylvania Bar Association. These awards recognize and thank those attorneys and judges who have used their talents to help needy children and families in Pennsylvania. Ms. Shannon serves as the associate member of Eckert Seamans' Pro Bono Committee and was instrumental in helping to develop and implement the Custody Concilliation project described below.

Eckert Seamans is a board member of the Pittsburgh Pro Bono Partnership, a group of law firms and corporate legal departments that collaborate to increase pro bono legal services in Southwestern Pennsylvania by developing signature pro bono projects that provide needed legal services to persons of limited means in the community. This year the Partnership developed the Custody Conciliation project, which provides free legal representation to parents in custody conciliations in Allegheny County. The need for a lawyer at this stage in the custody process is crucial because having both parties represented by counsel at the conciliation greatly increase the likelihood that the parties will reach a custody agreement.

Sarah L. Shannon is an attorney in the Business Division at Eckert Seamans. Ms. Shannon focuses her practice on corporate and business counseling, real estate and health law. She assists clients engaged in manufacturing, retail sales, real estate development and health care and represents both lenders and borrowers in asset-based and mortgage-based financing. Ms. Shannon received her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Shannon earned both a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh's Katz Graduate School of Business and a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. During this time, Ms. Shannon volunteered as an advocate for abused and neglected children in the Allegheny County Court Appointed Special Advocate program. Ms Shannon is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania. She is also a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Allegheny County Bar Association.
