Cox Smith Matthews Attorneys and Practice Areas Honored with Prestigious Chambers USA Rankings.
Cox Smith Matthews Incorporated today announced that four of its attorneys and two of its practice areas have been recognized as leaders in their fields and nationally ranked by Chambers USA, an annual legal guide that compiles rankings through research, client interviews and testimony. A. Michael Ferrill and James Spivey were ranked as Antitrust attorneys and Deborah Williamson and Mark Andrews ranked as Bankruptcy/Restructuring attorneys. The firm’s Antitrust and Bankruptcy/Restructuring practice areas were also recognized.

According to Chambers USA, “the San Antonio market keeps the ‘super, client-devoted’ partners at this full-service local firm busy. It has a long track record in antitrust work and benefits from the involvement of senior figures in the state Bar’s antitrust section. Around five of its attorneys are considered to be ‘the backbone of the San Antonio Bar.’”

Spivey, a shareholder in the firm's Litigation department, has represented clients in a variety of business disputes, including disputes involving claims brought under the Texas and federal antitrust laws. He has advised clients on all aspects of business litigation and has represented clients from a number of industries. He is a former chair of the Antitrust and Business Litigation Section of the State Bar of Texas and a former director of the Defense Counsel of San Antonio.

Mike Ferrill advises clients and other law firms on complex antitrust, securities and business litigation matters. He is a member of the Governing Council of the State Bar of Texas Antitrust and Business Litigation Section and is a former Chairman of that section. He is a Past Vice-Chairman of the American Bar Association's Antitrust Law Section Business Torts and Unfair Competition Committee, and is the editor of the ABA's book Business Torts and Unfair Competition: A Practitioner's Handbook. He also is the Editor-in-Chief of the Texas Business Litigation Journal, which is published by the State Bar of Texas Antitrust and Business Litigation Section, and is a member of the American Law Institute.

In its analysis of the firm’s bankruptcy department, Chambers USA said, “this San Antonio-based firm is ‘on the rise.’ Admired by clients for ‘excellent work and diligent attorneys,’ the 13-lawyer team includes a couple of recently recruited laterals into its ‘increasingly serious’ Dallas office. These include the ‘awesome, methodical and super-smart’ Deborah Williamson, who has a ‘detailed knowledge of the Texas bankruptcy court system’ and is ‘extremely organized.’”

Williamson is a shareholder, the department leader for the firm's Creditor's Rights, Restructuring and Bankruptcy department, and is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and by the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification in Business Bankruptcy Law. She advises clients on all aspects of business bankruptcy, including pre-bankruptcy strategic planning, fraudulent conveyances, acquisitions, lending, and complex issues in real estate and commercial transactions.

Shareholder Mark Andrews has practiced bankruptcy law for more than 20 years and has significant experience representing debtors, creditors and trustees in bankruptcy proceedings throughout the region. He has taught business and bankruptcy law at area universities and frequently speaks at bankruptcy conferences. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, State Bar of Texas, and John C. Ford Inns of Court.

“It’s a privilege for me to work alongside these talented individuals, and having them recognized by their clients for the great work they do is extremely rewarding for the entire firm,” said Managing Director Jamie Smith.
