Twelve Maynard, Cooper Lawyer's Recognized in Chambers USA 2007
Twelve lawyers from Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C. were listed as leading lawyers in Alabama in the latest edition of Chambers USA 2007, America’s Leading Lawyers for Business (Copyright 2007 by Chambers and Partners Publishing, of London, England). Maynard Cooper also received rankings in all five practice areas listed in the Chambers USA 2007 directory. The five practice areas covered in the directory include: 1) Banking and Finance; 2) Labor and Employment; 3) Litigation: General Commercial; 4) Corporate/Commercial and 5) Real Estate.

This year twelve Maynard Cooper lawyers are cited in the directory for special recognition in their areas of practice. Maynard Cooper has five attorneys listed in the area of Labor and Employment: Chris Mitchell, Jeffrey A. Lee, David Smith, Stephen E. Brown, and Carol Sue Nelson. In addition, three Maynard Cooper lawyers, Gregory S. Curran, Mark L. Drew and Christopher B. Harmon, were hailed as leading attorneys in the Corporate/Commercial practice area. Luce Forward Welcomes Three New Additions to San Diego
Attorneys Logan Fairfax and Tara Murphy have joined Luce Forward as Associates in the San Diego and Carmel Valley/Del Mar offices, respectively. Luce Forward has also strengthened their growing intellectual property practice with the addition of Kara Bearfield as a Foreign Legal Advisor in the firm’s Carmel Valley/Del Mar office.

“As our firm continues its statewide growth, we are proud to welcome Logan, Tara and Kara,” said Robert J. Bell, Luce Forward’s Managing Partner. “I am confident that their expertise will contribute greatly to the strength of our firm, and the success of our clients.” Bearfield, an accomplished attorney in the United Kingdom, will work with the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. Her extensive background in the practice of European intellectual property law includes specializations in the management of intellectual property and matters pertaining to trade marks and designs. Bearfield will assist with international matters and provide insight to the European market. Prior to joining Luce Forward, Bearfield worked in private practice in London, England. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Aston University in Birmingham, UK and a Master of Science degree from Queen Mary & Westfield College at the University of London.

Fairfax’s background lies in real estate advisement for both public and private entities, class action lawsuit litigation and general business matters. As part of Luce Forward’s Business Practice Group, he will work in real estate syndications, including tenancy in common (TIC) transactions. Fairfax earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Arizona and a Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law.

Murphy, who also joins Luce Forward’s Business Practice Group, will be an integral member of the team focusing on general transactional work. In addition to being a member of the State Bar of California, Murphy is also a licensed CPA. Murphy’s background in law includes service on transaction teams as corporate counsel to both public and private entities. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego and received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

Katten Represents Sterling Capital Partners and Management Team of Educate Inc. in $600 Million Going-Private Deal
The law firm of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is pleased to have served as legal counsel to a group of investors and affiliates of Sterling Capital Partners and the senior management of Educate, Inc., and certain equity co-investors in the acquisition of Educate, Inc. - a $600 million going-private transaction. Educate, Inc. (Nasdaq: EEEE) is a leading pre-K-12 education company delivering supplemental education services and products to students and their families.

As a result of the transaction, which Educate stockholders approved on June 12, 2007, each issued and outstanding share of Educate common stock was canceled and converted automatically into the right to receive $8.00 in cash, without interest. The total value of the transaction, including assumed debt, was approximately $535 million. As a result of this transaction, Educate's common stock ceased trading on the Nasdaq Global Market at market close on June 14, 2007, and was thereafter delisted.

Hodgson Russ partner S. Robert Schrager co-chair of New York City NYSBA CLE program
S. Robert Schrager, a partner in Hodgson Russ LLP’s Business Litigation and Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Commercial Litigation Practice Groups, recently served as overall planning co-chair for the New York State Bar Association’s CLE program “Working Out and Litigating the Problem Loan,” held in New York City. At the program, he was a member of a panel, that discussed banking law. Garry M. Graber, head of the firm’s Restructuring, Bankruptcy & Commercial Litigation Practice Group, served as moderator for the same program in Syracuse.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Schrager was a law assistant to the justices of the Appellate Division, Second Department, of the New York Supreme Court. Mr. Schrager has over 25 years of experience practicing commercial, financial and bankruptcy litigation, and general business law. His practice has included a wide range of civil litigation matters and middle-market transactions. As a senior trial and appellate attorney, he handles complex matters with substantial financial exposure to clients and representation of clients in arbitration and mediation. Mr. Schrager serves as a special master for the New York State Supreme Court and is a certified mediator and a member of the Panel of Mediators for the United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York.

Mr. Graber has over 27 years of experience practicing bankruptcy, corporate and financial restructuring, creditors' rights, financial services, commercial and corporate litigation, and general business law. He represents troubled business entities, their secured and unsecured creditors, and their shareholders and principals inside and outside of bankruptcy, as well as creditors' committees, equity committees, trustees, examiners, and purchasers in bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings across the United States and in cross-border matters, primarily with Canada. He has also handled complex loan work-out transactions, lender liability, director and officer liability, bank fraud, UCC and mortgage foreclosures, and other litigation.

Dickstein Shapiro Welcomes Sandra Thayer to its Los Angeles Office
Dickstein Shapiro LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Sandra Thayer as counsel to the firm’s Insurance Coverage Practice in the Los Angeles office. Ms. Thayer will focus her practice on insurance coverage, and complex commercial litigation.

“Sandy’s experience with a wide range of insurance coverage issues and her broad commercial litigation experience will be an asset to our Insurance Coverage Practice, as well as a complement to our fast-expanding Business Litigation Practice,” said Kirk Pasich, a member of Dickstein Shapiro’s Executive Committee.

Ms. Thayer focuses her practice on insurance recovery and complex commercial litigation, including matters involving employment disputes, business torts, contract disputes, unfair competition, insurance recovery, class actions, and antitrust. She also dedicates a significant amount of time to pro bono efforts, including employment discrimination, tort claims, and adoption proceedings.

“The Insurance Coverage Practice at Dickstein Shapiro is one of the country’s best, and I am excited to be joining it and the growing LA office,” said Ms. Thayer.

Ms. Thayer joins Dickstein Shapiro from Howrey LLP, where she was a senior associate in the Global Litigation and Insurance Recovery practices. Ms. Thayer earned her J.D. from Tulane Law School and her B.A. from University of California – Los Angeles. While in law school, Ms. Thayer was a judicial extern for the Honorable G. Thomas Porteous, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The addition of Ms. Thayer follows recent expansion of Dickstein Shapiro’s Los Angeles office. The five-attorney complex litigation group led by partners James Turken and Amy Rubinfeld joined the firm earlier this month. With the addition of Ms. Thayer, the office now has 14 attorneys in its Insurance Coverage Practice and more than 20 attorneys overall. The firm’s Los Angeles office continues to pursue opportunities for strategic growth, and anticipates continued expansion.

Dickstein Shapiro’s nationally recognized Insurance Coverage Practice has more than 90 attorneys from all three offices dedicating the majority of their time to insurance coverage matters. He has extensive experience in condominiums and community associations, real estate and real estate development, land use and construction litigation. He represents more than 575 condominium and community associations and various developers, contractors, and subcontractors, providing consultation, documentation and representation concerning specialty and mixed use developments.

Makower earned a B.G.S. degree from the University of Michigan and a J.D. degree from Washington University. He is active with the State Bar of Michigan (member, Real Property Law Section and past Chair, ex-officio member of Council, and Past Chairperson, Committee on Condominiums, PUDs, and Cooperatives); a member of the College of Community Association Lawyers; and a member of the Board of Directors and immediate past president for two terms of the Community Associations Institute, Michigan Chapter.

He is a frequent lecturer and author on topics related to condominium law and real property law.

Dechert Honored by NLADA for Defense of Guantanamo Bay Detainees
Dechert LLP was one of more than 50 law firms recognized June 12 by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association with a 2007 Beacon of Justice Award at the NLADA's annual Exemplary Awards Dinner. The firms, honored in ceremonies at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C., were acknowledged for providing pro bono legal assistance to detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

"We very much appreciate that the NLADA chose to recognize the many firms across the country who are representing detainees in Guantanamo Bay," said Suzanne E. Turner, partner and chair of Dechert's firmwide Pro Bono practice.

The firms were cited for providing "representation to individuals, despite public criticism."

The NLADA pays tribute at its annual dinner to attorneys who "labor tirelessly to improve the quality of representation for people who are unable to pay for legal assistance."

Carolyn Welshhans and Rebecca Dick accepted the award on behalf of the firm.
