“We are proud to have twelve of our firm's lawyers named as ‘Legal Elite’ and ‘Up and Comers’ by Florida Trend magazine,” said Douglas A. Ward, managing director of Rogers Towers. “This recognition is well-deserved for each of them, and obviously reflects how highly regarded they are by their peers.”

How the Legal Elite are Chosen

Balloting for this year’s Legal Elite began in October 2006, when Florida Trend invited all in-state members of The Florida Bar to participate in the balloting. Announcements were placed in the Florida Bar Journal to publicize the ballot deadline and voting criteria. Additionally, ballots were mailed to the 2006 Legal Elite, the lawyers who participated in last year’s balloting, the top contact at law firms, local bar associations and Florida members of the Association of Corporate Counsel. Advertisements were placed in the Florida Bar News and on the Florida Bar website.

Attorneys were asked to name lawyers whom they hold in the highest regard - lawyers with whom they have worked or would recommend to others. In addition, they were asked to submit two names of the best up-and-coming attorneys in the state.

Poyner & Spruill LLP Attorneys and Staff Participate in Susan G. Komen Triangle Race For the Cure
For the third year in a row, Poyner & Spruill LLP participated in the Susan G. Komen Triangle Race For the Cure. The team of 85 attorneys, staff members, and family participated in the race, and the firm raised over $4,600, through individual fundraising efforts and a firm gift, for an increase of nearly 70% in the firm’s contribution to this worthwhile cause over the previous year’s efforts.

“Our firm members really came out in strong numbers this year, giving of their time and resources, to support a cause dear to our hearts. The firm has had many members of its family affected by breast cancer over the years. Our Poyner & Spruill team dedicated this year’s race efforts in loving memory of Gretchen Goodfellow and Gerri Kelly, two former co-workers and breast cancer survivors. I believe that the significant fundraising increase we saw this year was bolstered by a strong desire to do something special in memory of Gretchen and Gerri,” said Julie W. Hampton, Poyner & Spruill attorney and team chair.

The race, now in its 11th year, was held on Saturday, June 9 on the campus of Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Proceeds benefited the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to find a cure and end to breast cancer. The Komen Race for the Cure’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures. The organization benefits from the thousands of volunteers, service providers, sponsors, survivors, donors and event participants who helped raise nearly $2 million last year to support this important mission.

Hughes Hubbard's Chair, Candace Beinecke named among "Most Influential"
Hughes Hubbard's chair, Candace Beinecke was named one of “The 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal.

“Beinecke broke new ground in 1999, when Hughes Hubbard & Reed became one of the first major law firms to elect a woman to lead it,” The Journal wrote. “A corporate attorney, she is a pioneer in bringing the expertise of women lawyers into the boardroom.”

To compile its list, The Journal asked for nominations of women “who have had a national impact on their fields and beyond during the last five years.” The publication “looked for women with the demonstrated power to change the legal landscape, shape public affairs, launch industries and do big things.”

Other women who made the list include Rachel Robbins, general counsel of the New York Stock Exchange and former General Counsel of JP Morgan; Elena Kagan, the first woman dean at Harvard Law School; Patricia Wald, former Chief Judge of the DC Circuit who sits on the subcommittee of the Board of Directors of George Soros's Justice Initiative; and Mary Jo White, the only woman to have held the position of U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The Journal noted that women, more than men, still face the challenge of balancing the demands of a family and a career. Still, “In the end,” The Journal noted, “the list reflects not just some of the most influential women lawyers, but some of the most influential lawyers, period.
