Womble Carlyle's Washington, D.C. Office Announces Pro Bono Veteran's Legal Assistance Program
Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, today announced its Washington, D.C. pro bono project, "When Duty Calls." Womble Carlyle will host the program in an effort to provide military veterans with pro bono legal assistance in the initial stages of disability claims filed with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Greater Washington, D.C. area serves over 400,000 veterans, many of whom have suffered combat-related injuries or other service-connected disabilities, and are in need of legal assistance in submitting veteran disability claims. Womble Carlyle developed When Duty Calls for the purpose of beginning to meet this need by providing a Washington, D.C. area resource dedicated exclusively to assisting veterans who wish to file or re-file initial disability claims.

When Duty Calls will recruit licensed Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, Delaware and Maryland attorneys (and supervised paraprofessionals, legal support staff, and law students) to provide legal assistance to veterans on a pro bono basis, train those volunteers on the detailed process of preparing and submitting veteran disability claims, and conduct clinics to assist veterans in preparing their disability claims.

Womble Carlyle will host the training session for attorneys in Womble Carlyle's Washington, D.C. office on Tuesday, July 10th. The firm will then conduct a day-long clinic for veterans in its D.C. office on Wednesday, July 11th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has offered to provide support for the training by sending experts from their central headquarters office in Washington and the local Regional Benefits office. Womble Carlyle attorney and former General Counsel at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Tim McClain will provide an introduction to the training session and clinic. Michael Taub, an attorney with the Philadelphia Homeless Advocacy Center who is recognized nationally for his work with disabled veterans, will also provide training on July 10th and supervise the clinic on July 11th.
