Former Federal Trade Commission Antitrust Official Joins Sonnenschein
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP today announced that Susan S. DeSanti has joined the national law firm as a partner in its Antitrust group. DeSanti most recently served as senior counsel to the Antitrust Modernization Commission, a bipartisan commission created by Congress to make recommendations concerning the nation’s antitrust laws, and was a primary author of the report that it recently issued. She previously held a variety of high-level positions at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and, before joining the government, spent 10 years in private practice providing antitrust litigation and counseling expertise. DeSanti will practice in Sonnenschein’s Washington office.

“Susan is a highly regarded and well-known antitrust lawyer who will add significant strength to the firm,” said Amy L. Bess, managing partner of Sonnenschein’s Washington office. “Her depth of experience with a wide range of antitrust and competition-related issues fits well with many of our strategic practice areas, particularly health care and policy, intellectual property and technology, energy, communications and corporate.”

During her 15-year career with the FTC, DeSanti served as director of policy planning and later as deputy general counsel for policy studies, and is widely regarded as having led the successful rejuvenation and growth of the FTC’s policy program. She oversaw several high-profile projects, including ones that resulted in critical legislative changes concerning generic drug entry, and FTC recommendations for new approaches to encourage competition in the nation’s health care system and reforms of the patent system to enhance innovation. In addition, DeSanti spearheaded the development of the first antitrust guidelines for joint ventures and played a key role in recent FTC cases involving standard setting and patent-related issues. Her work in private practice included large-scale private litigation and mergers, as well as counseling.

“The variety of legal and policy issues that I have focused on during my career align quite well with the work that Sonnenschein’s attorneys do, ” noted DeSanti. “The firm has shown a true commitment to building its antitrust practice, and I am excited to be part of it.”

DeSanti is a frequent speaker at legal, academic and business conferences, discussing antitrust, competition related, and other policy issues. She is a former council member for the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section. DeSanti received a J.D. degree, cum laude, from Boston University School of Law and an M.Ed. degree in educational research from Northeastern University. She earned a B.A. degree from Sarah Lawrence University.
