Scott and Jenner & Block’s Marketing Department Honored by BWLA
Partner Kenyanna M. Scott was recently honored by the Black Women Lawyers’ Association with its President’s Award at its recent Annual Installation and Awards Reception held on June 14. BWLA President Nathalina Hudson presented the award, which honors "unwavering commitment to ensure a legacy of excellence with BWLA."

Ms. Scott, who served as BWLA Vice-President during the past year, also served as Co-Chair with Ms. Hudson of BWLA’s National Summit held in Chicago last March. Ms. Hudson described Ms. Scott as "an invaluable asset to BWLA whose drive and determination has inspired us all." She also referenced Ms. Scott’s commitment to service that led BWLA to join a group of bar associations to develop programming and seminars about the suffering of women in Darfur.

Jenner & Block’s Marketing Department was also honored that evening with BWLA’s "Helping Hand Award." Ms. Hudson presented the award to Jenner & Block Chief Marketing Officer Theresa Jaffe for the department’s work on behalf of the Summit, including the formation and execution of the marketing strategy and materials. She thanked Mrs. Jaffe for serving as a volunteer marketing advisor to BWLA and "thinking outside the box while at the same time making sure that our organization’s goals did not get lost."

"BWLA is truly appreciative of the time and energy dedicated by Mrs. Jaffe and the Marketing Team at Jenner & Block in helping us to make our Summit a success," Ms. Hudson concluded.

BWLA’s new officers, including incoming President Dorothy Capers, were sworn in during the installation ceremony.

BWLA is a Chicago-based organization that identifies and addresses issues and concerns that are unique to African-American women lawyers and judges.

Legal Times Names Richard E. Wiley a Leading Communications Lawyer
Wiley Rein Managing Partner and Communications Practice chair Richard E. Wiley has been named a “Leading Communications Lawyer” by Legal Times, which notes that, having been called “the godfather of HDTV” and “the brand name of the communications bar,” “[i]t’s not easy to come up with new accolades for Richard Wiley.”

The Legal Times profile of Mr. Wiley lauds his “skills as a strategist, his industry-wide expertise, and his extensive network of connections,” praise echoed by clients, who told the paper that he is “a truly terrific strategist” with “a tremendous capability for building and maintaining relationships with clients and people in government and the industry at large.” One long-time client told Legal Times, “People trust his judgment. He’s so straightforward. He’s greatly admired by people across the political spectrum. He treats everyone with respect.”

As reported by Legal Times, “High-profile deals are rather a specialty for Wiley.” He currently represents Sirius Satellite Radio before the FCC in its bid to merge with XM Satellite Radio, and he recently helped IntelSat win FCC approval for the $6.1 billion purchase of PanAmSat Holding Corp., thus forming the world’s largest satellite company. Mr. Wiley also represented Comcast when, with Time Warner, the cable company bought Adelphia for $17 billion.

Mr. Wiley told Legal Times he does not anticipating slowing down any time soon. “I’ve always found this field fascinating,” he said. “It keeps an old guy like me wanting to come back to the office.”

WCM Wins Summary Judgment in Ocean County, New Jersey
Associate Brad Thelander was awarded summary judgment in an Ocean County, New Jersey personal injury action. In the case of Wennlund v. Joseph O’Leary, et al., plaintiff, a patron at a chain restaurant, was assaulted in the restaurant’s parking lot by his “friends” after a dispute regarding the bill. Plaintiff suffered a fractured left orbital socket and retinal tears that required surgery to treat. He argued that our client, the restaurant owner, was responsible for the accident because it failed to adequately safeguard the parking lot and/or prevent patrons from assaulting each other. Plaintiff further argued that the likelihood of an assault was made apparent to our client because of the unruly behavior of the boys involved in the assault when the bill was presented.

At the close of discovery, we moved for summary judgment. We argued that it was not reasonably foreseeable that the plaintiff would be assaulted by his “friends” merely through an observation of teenage boys being loud, boisterous and unruly. As a result, we submitted that no amount of precautionary steps could have prevented the accident. In opposition, plaintiff argued that there was a question of fact as to whether the boys’ behavior was so egregious that a prudent restaurant owner would have foreseen that an assault was possible.

WCM Wins Personal Injury Arbitration in Passaic County, NJ
Partner Robert Ball secured a defense verdict in a binding personal injury arbitration in Passaic County, New Jersey. In the case of First Trenton Indemnity v. Famished Frog, plaintiff was involved in a one car motor vehicle accident and suffered various personal injuries. At the time of the accident, plaintiff was legally intoxicated. He alleged that our client, a tavern, had continued to serve him alcohol long after he was visibly intoxicated and that said service was a proximate cause of his subsequent accident.

At the arbitration, we argued that plaintiff lacked any evidence to suggest that our client had notice of plaintiff’s intoxicated state. In the absence of such evidence, we submitted that plaintiff could not make out a prima facie case of negligence.

WCM Wins Summary Judgment in Cape May County, NJ Coverage Case
Partner Michael Bono was awarded summary judgment in a Cape May County coverage action. In White v. Kalin et al., the defendant accidentally shot plaintiff during a hunting accident. Defendant, a member of a hunting club, sued our client, an insurer, for defense and indemnification, claiming coverage under the insurance policy issued to his hunting club.

At the close of discovery, we filed for summary judgment, arguing that defendant’s private hunting excursion was not a club “activity” covered under the policy, and that coverage was limited solely to the ownership, maintenance, or use of the club’s lodge.

William Herbert Appointed as Vice Chair of Asia/Pacific Committee
Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP attorney William Herbert was recently appointed as Vice Chair of the Asia/Pacific Committee of the American Bar Association Section of International Law. Mr. Herbert was also selected to be this year’s editor for the Asia/Pacific Committee’s annual article in The International Lawyer.

The Asia/Pacific Committee focuses on bringing together attorneys and other legal professionals who have an interest in the region. There are 464 members who are committed to developing awareness of issues within the region, reviewing legal matters in the region, meeting other attorneys who have a common interest in Asia/Pacific affairs and sponsoring programs on legal topics within the region.

Will Herbert is Counsel in the International Section of SGR. Mr. Herbert works with Japanese clients who are looking to do business in the United States. He spent 10 years living and working in Japan. He speaks, writes and reads Japanese. Mr. Herbert received his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Washington as well as earned his LL.M. degree in Asian and Comparative Law.

Rebecca B. Beal Joins Lathrop & Gage as an Associate
Joel Voran, CEO of Lathrop & Gage L.C. announced Rebecca B. Beal has joined the Kansas City, Mo., office as an associate in the real estate practice area.

Prior to joining the firm, Beal served as bond counsel for Kansas and Missouri Governments on tax-exempt and taxable bond financings as well as providing local municipalities legal advice regarding economic development initiatives. During law school, Ms. Beal served as a law clerk for two law firms in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the Benton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Beal earned her bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in 2003 and her juris doctorate from the University of Tulsa College of Law, with highest honor, in 2006. Beal is a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, Association for Women Lawyers and the American Bar Association. Beal received a merit scholarship, CALI Award of Excellence, was an Oklahoma Bar Association Outstanding Student Award nominee, a member of the Phi Delta Phi and Order of the Curule Chair. She was a senior staff member of the Energy Law Journal and a member of the Board of Advocates.
