Baker & McKenzie Advises Standard Chartered Bank on the Establishment of its Private Banking Business in Hong Kong and Singapore
Baker & McKenzie’s financial services team in Hong Kong and Singapore recently advised Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited and Standard Chartered Bank (collectively, “SCB”) in relation to the establishment of its private banking business in Hong Kong and Singapore.

In addition to Hong Kong and Singapore, SCB has announced plans to open private banking centres in 10 other locations by the end of June, including Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, New Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, London and Jersey. SCB’s private banking business will target business entrepreneurs and senior executives with US$1 million to US$50 million in assets.

The Baker & McKenzie team was led by partner Milton Cheng in Hong Kong and Angela Lim in Singapore. The team was responsible for advising on legal and regulatory issues relating to the establishment of private banking operations, including working on the customer documentation and compliance and operations manuals and advising on related regulatory and compliance issues.

Commenting on the deal, Milton Cheng, who heads Baker & McKenzie’s financial services team in Hong Kong, said, “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to assist SCB on the launch in Hong Kong and Singapore of its private banking business. We are similarly excited by the growth prospects of the wealth management sector across Asia, and with our complementary footprint and resources across the region, we hope that we can continue to assist SCB in its development and expansion of this new business line.”

Akerman Scores Higher in Minority Law Journal's Diversity Scorecard
Akerman Senterfitt continues rising up the diversity rankings in 2007, ascending to #27 in the Minority Law Journal's Annual Diversity Scorecard. The publication determined the rankings by surveying 255 of the largest and highest-grossing firms in the country, including the 250 largest firms as ranked by The National Law Journal and five additional firms from The American Lawyer’s Am Law 200. In 2006, Akerman ranked #36 in the Diversity Scorecard.

Akerman's longstanding commitment to diversity has gained increasing recognition for its diversity, especially in recent years. In 2007, Diversity & the Bar magazine named the firm among the Top Law Firms for Women, and the firm's Diversity Committee Chair, Joseph Hatchett, was presented with the Spirit of Excellence Award from the American Bar Association's Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession.

In 2006, the Minority Corporate Counsel Association presented the firm with the Thomas L. Sager Award for diversity leadership, and MultiCultural Law magazine named Akerman the Top Law Firm for Hispanic Americans for the second year in a row. In 2006, the firm also received a diversity award from the Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management, which recognizes local organizations that foster an inclusive work environment in which all employees are inspired to contribute their best, strengthened by their different perspectives, backgrounds and life experiences. In 2005, Diversity Chair Joseph Hatchett was inducted into the National Bar Association Hall of Fame, in recognition of his more than 40 years of dedication to the cause of justice and equality before the courts of the United States of America, and on behalf of the African-American community.

The Akerman Senterfitt client list includes nearly 100 corporations that belong to the "Call to Action – Diversity in the Legal Profession." These companies have made a commitment to actively look for law firms that distinguish themselves in diversity issues, and to end or limit relationships with firms whose track records reflect a lack of meaningful interest in diversity.
