Leading Japanese Antitrust Lawyer Joins Bingham's Tokyo Office
Hiroshi Iyori, one of Japan’s foremost authorities on antitrust law, has joined Bingham in its Tokyo office, strengthening the firm’s leading team of antitrust lawyers.

Iyori, chairman of the Japan Competition Law Research Institute and the International Antimonopoly Law and Industrial Property Law Research Institute, joins from the Asahi Law Offices. His arrival further establishes Bingham as one of the key firms in Japan for complex antitrust analysis in mergers and acquisitions, unfair competition and technology cases, as well as intellectual property and antitrust litigation. By fall 2007, Bingham’s Tokyo office will expand further and have one of the largest offices of any foreign law firm in Japan with more than 50 Japanese lawyers (bengoshi).

"In our global economy, antitrust law strategy is critical to all financial and corporate client operations worldwide,” said Bingham chairman Jay Zimmerman. “We’re thrilled to have Mr. Iyori join Bingham’s cutting-edge antitrust, restructuring, financial services and corporate practice."

In addition to major antitrust cases in the U.S., Bingham currently represents major corporations in investigations before the Japan Fair Trade Commission.

"The addition of Mr. Iyori to the firm's large stable of antitrust practitioners will allow us to even better serve our clients, many of whom operate internationally," added San Francisco partner Holly House, co-leader of Bingham's antitrust and trade regulations group.

Iyori is one of Japan’s best known antimonopoly law authorities, having served as secretary general of the Japan Fair Trade Commission from 1984 to 1985 and as a commissioner of the JFTC from 1986 to 1991, before entering private law practice.

“Bingham has one of the best antitrust practices among U.S. law firms,” said Iyori. “I look forward to working with them on the numerous international antitrust law cases involving Japanese, U.S. and European corporations.”

Ranked No. 1 in antitrust law by the Best Lawyers in America 2007, Bingham recently bolstered its antitrust group with the arrival of Thane Scott, co-chair of Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge’s antitrust practice, to the Boston office.

Bingham recently announced that on October 1, 2007, it will combine with New Tokyo International, a premier insolvency, corporate and litigation firm of approximately 22 lawyers. The combination will increase the number of lawyers in Bingham's Tokyo office, a foreign legal joint enterprise with Sakai & Mimura, to more than 50 Japanese lawyers and six foreign lawyers.

Bingham's Japanese Practice focuses on large-scale, cross-border corporate/M&A, financial restructurings, finance, antitrust and intellectual property matters.

Mackenzie Hughes Attorney Receives Pro Bono Award from American Bar Association
The American Bar Association will honor Dennis R. Baldwin, of counsel with Mackenzie Hughes LLP, with the prestigious ABA Senior Lawyers Division Pro Bono Award.

The ABA Senior Lawyers Division presents its Pro Bono Award annually to senior lawyers who have devoted themselves “in an outstanding and meritorious way” by volunteering to help meet the needs of those individuals and organizations who are in need of legal services and are unable to pay for the services themselves.

Baldwin was nominated by the Onondaga County Bar Association for his dedication and work in the association’s “Volunteer Lawyer Project” since its inception in 1990. Baldwin was instrumental in providing the framework to create a coordinated volunteer lawyer pro bono program and was a key player throughout the years in recruiting a large number of both attorneys and law firms to volunteer their time for those in need.

Baldwin also played an important role in founding and sustaining the Volunteer Lawyer Project’s “Eviction Defense Clinic,” a program where people who received eviction notices could go for legal services and help in negotiating with their landlords. Mackenzie Hughes currently has a weekly rotation schedule of lawyers who cover the Eviction Defense Clinic every Thursday.
“I’m really honored to be recognized with this award, but I’m going to accept this award on behalf of the hundreds of Syracuse area lawyers who really stepped up to help the community,” Baldwin said. “I’m just a cog in the wheel. All the hundreds of lawyers in this area who willingly gave their time are the real heroes.”

Baldwin is the second member of the Onondaga County Bar Association to receive the award in the past four years. George Lowe, a U.S. Magistrate Judge and the chair of the OCBA Pro-Bono Practice Committee who also received the award in 2003, felt Baldwin deserves the award.

“There are plenty of lawyers with a commitment to pro bono, but usually in supporting firm-wide incentives that encourage pro bono,” Lowe said. “Denny goes beyond that. He rolls up his sleeves and goes to work with a goal to serve and make a difference. I don’t know of anyone else who has this kind of dedication to pro bono while a senior partner at a major law firm. That to me is what makes him unique.”

Phillips Receives Ebby Rose of Distinction
Fran Phillips, a partner in the Environmental Practice Group at Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, has been selected as a recipient of the Ebby Rose of Distinction Award. The Ebby Rose of Distinction Award is presented to individuals who have exhibited, by their deeds and actions, that they are an outstanding citizen who has improved the lives of others in
the community. The award was initiated in 2005 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Ebby Halliday, REALTORS and is named for the internationally registered yellow Ebby rose

Ms. Phillips currently serves as the president of the board of directors for Keep Dallas Beautiful, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to engaging individuals to take responsibility for improving their local community environment. Her role with Keep Dallas Beautiful was key to her receiving the Ebby Rose of Distinction.

“Community volunteerism is something I believe you have to be passionate about,” says Ms. Phillips. “Environmental protection is not only my career vocation but also my avocation. With goals of promoting reuse and recycling, along with urban beautification, the work Keep Dallas Beautiful does is something that touches me personally and deeply.”

The honor is well deserved, says Steve Good, managing partner for Gardere. “Fran is a tireless advocate for everyone doing their part to help their community,” Mr. Good says. “Her passion for protecting the environment is evident not only in her law practice, but in her everyday life as well.”

As a recipient of the Ebby Rose of Distinction, Ms. Phillips will receive a commemorative crystal award and a gift of $500, which she plans to donate to Keep Dallas Beautiful. Additionally, a special vignette about her work will air on KTVT-CBS 11 from July 27 through July 31. She will also be honored with other award recipients during a special dinner in September
