Joseph C. Dole has always had a fondness for hard work and education.

Since earning his law degree from Yale Law School in 1988, Dole has focused his practice on labor and employment law, representing both private and public employers, and with an additional specialization in higher education law. Now Dole, a newly appointed partner at Mackenzie Hughes LLP, looks to expand the firm’s concentration in these areas.

At Mackenzie Hughes, Dole’s practice focuses on all aspects of labor and employment law, including: employment discrimination, collective bargaining and arbitration, wage and hour issues, employee non-competition, employment at-will and employment contracts. In addition to representing employers in the litigation of employment discrimination cases in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies, he will provide counseling to employers in labor and employment matters to minimize the risk of litigation arising out of employment disputes.

“Joe’s invaluable expertise and experience will play an important role in expanding our labor and employment practice,” said Art Wentlandt, partner and chairman of the Mackenzie Hughes Executive Committee. “He’s one of the region’s premier labor and employment law attorneys and we’re thrilled to have him on our talented team.”

Prior to joining Mackenzie Hughes, Dole served as an associate clinical professor at the Cornell University Law School’s “Lawyering Program.” He also served as a visiting professor at Syracuse University's College of Law, teaching legal writing, employment discrimination and labor law classes.

Dole spent 14 years as a labor and employment law attorney at another local law firm where he provided representation and advice on labor and employment matters to a wide variety of private and public sector employees. In particular, he provided counsel and representation to several New York higher education institutions, including Syracuse University, Elmira College, Clarkson University, Ithaca College, and St. Lawrence University, on both employment and student affairs issues.

“Mackenzie Hughes has always been one of the most respected law firms in the CNY community and I’m very excited to be working with so many gifted attorneys,” Dole said.

Dole received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1983 and a master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1985. While earning his law degree from Yale Law School, Dole served as a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. He is admitted to practice in New York, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States District Courts for Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and is a member of the Labor and Employment Law sections of the American Bar and the New York State Bar Associations.

The American Bar Association will honor Dennis R. Baldwin, of counsel with Mackenzie Hughes LLP, with the prestigious ABA Senior Lawyers Division Pro Bono Award.

The ABA Senior Lawyers Division presents its Pro Bono Award annually to senior lawyers who have devoted themselves “in an outstanding and meritorious way” by volunteering to help meet the needs of those individuals and organizations who are in need of legal services and are unable to pay for the services themselves.

Baldwin was nominated by the Onondaga County Bar Association for his dedication and work in the association’s “Volunteer Lawyer Project” since its inception in 1990. Baldwin was instrumental in providing the framework to create a coordinated volunteer lawyer pro bono program and was a key player throughout the years in recruiting a large number of both attorneys and law firms to volunteer their time for those in need.

Baldwin also played an important role in founding and sustaining the Volunteer Lawyer Project’s “Eviction Defense Clinic,” a program where people who received eviction notices could go for legal services and help in negotiating with their landlords. Mackenzie Hughes currently has a weekly rotation schedule of lawyers who cover the Eviction Defense Clinic every Thursday.
“I’m really honored to be recognized with this award, but I’m going to accept this award on behalf of the hundreds of Syracuse area lawyers who really stepped up to help the community,” Baldwin said. “I’m just a cog in the wheel. All the hundreds of lawyers in this area who willingly gave their time are the real heroes.”

Baldwin is the second member of the Onondaga County Bar Association to receive the award in the past four years. George Lowe, a U.S. Magistrate Judge and the chair of the OCBA Pro-Bono Practice Committee who also received the award in 2003, felt Baldwin deserves the award.

“There are plenty of lawyers with a commitment to pro bono, but usually in supporting firm-wide incentives that encourage pro bono,” Lowe said. “Denny goes beyond that. He rolls up his sleeves and goes to work with a goal to serve and make a difference. I don’t know of anyone else who has this kind of dedication to pro bono while a senior partner at a major law firm. That to me is what makes him unique.”
