K&L Gates’ Fredric C. Tausend Named Ninth Circuit’s Outstanding Lawyer
Fredric C. Tausend of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP (K&L Gates) was honored at the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference as the recipient of the prestigious 2007 John P. Frank Award, recognizing his nearly 50-year legal career as an outstanding lawyer practicing in the federal courts of the western United States. Tausend is the only Seattle lawyer, and the first lawyer outside of Arizona and California, to receive the award.

The winning nomination highlighted Tausend as a pioneering advocate for diversity in the legal workplace and lauded his contributions as a mentor, pro bono lawyer, and bar leader.

“I am delighted to see Fred Tausend receive this award. He is an outstanding lawyer, who has distinguished himself not only for his success in the courtroom, but for the influence he has had as an educator and mentor to so many young lawyers,” said Ninth Circuit Chief Judge Mary M. Schroeder.

The John P. Frank Award recognizes a lawyer who has “demonstrated outstanding character and integrity, dedication to the rule of law, proficiency as a trial and appellate lawyer, success in promoting collegiality among members of the bench and bar, and a lifetime of service to the federal courts of the Ninth Circuit.” The award, established in 2003, is named after the late John P. Frank of Arizona, a distinguished attorney, author, law professor, early civil liberties advocate and legal historian.

“Fred’s civic dedication and wealth of knowledge have been an inspiration to the legal community and to his colleagues,” said Robert Mitchell, administrative partner in the Seattle office of K&L Gates.

Tausend’s legal career spans nearly five decades. He has been a partner and senior counsel at K&L Gates since 1990, focusing his practice on commercial litigation and antitrust and, more recently, alternative dispute resolution. He has distinguished himself as a top antitrust lawyer. He has also been influential in academia, serving from 1980-1986 as dean of the University of Puget Sound (now Seattle University) School of Law, and serving for two years as a Shefelman Distinguished Lecturer at the University of Washington Law School. Tausend continues to teach a course on the jury system at both law schools. In addition, he is recognized at the highest levels for his community service and contributions to the bar, including his efforts to develop and promote diversity within the legal sector.

“This honor is richly deserved,” said Peter Kalis, K&L Gates’ Chairman and Global Managing Partner. “We are proud of Fred's accomplishments and of the example he has set within our firm and the profession at large.”
