RUDEN McCLOSKY PRESENTED GRANT FROM $100,000 SAM SMITH MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT TO GUARDIANSHIP PROGRAM OF DADE COUNTY, INC.
Fort Lauderdale, FL: Ruden McClosky presented the first grant from the Samuel S. Smith Memorial Endowment Fund to the Guardianship Program of Dade County, Inc. at yesterday’s Dade County Bar Association meeting at the Hyatt Regency of Miami. The inaugural grant of $6,484 was the first disbursement from the $100,000 fund established by the Ruden McClosky law firm.

The check was presented by Carl Schuster, President and Managing Director of Ruden McClosky, and John Thornton of the Florida Bar Foundation to Jerry Santeiro, Executive Director of the Guardianship Program of Dade County, Inc., and Sergio Mendez, President of the Guardianship Program of Dade County, Inc. Representing the Samuel S. Smith family were Mr. Smith’s widow Susan Smith and her children Lauren Hawkins and Gary Smith and Mr. Smith’s brother, Harry Smith, a partner of Ruden McClosky.

The Samuel S. Smith Memorial Endowment Fund honors the memory of attorney Samuel Smith, a partner of the Ruden McClosky law firm, who passed away in 1999. Sam Smith was the driving force and founding president behind the Guardianship Program of Dade County, and was a nationally recognized specialist in probate, guardianship and trust litigation. Following Smith's death, the Fund was established in 2001 by Ruden McClosky at The Florida Bar Foundation Endowment Trust to protect the legal rights of low income incapacitated, elderly and disabled persons. Mr. Schuster said, “This would have meant a great deal to Sam. He worked tirelessly to make the Guardianship Program of Dade County a reality.”

The Guardianship Program of Dade County, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) public charity that provides guardianship services to indigent adults in Miami-Dade County. The oldest and largest public guardian in the state, the Program protects the legal rights of low income incapacitated, elderly and disabled persons and served 935 wards in 2005, representing over half of all public guardianships in Florida.

The Florida Bar Foundation Endowment Trust is a 501(c)(3) public charity created and operated exclusively for the benefit of the charitable, scientific, literary or educational exempt purposes of The Florida Bar Foundation. The Florida Bar Foundation is a charitable organization.

THE OLD FIREHOUSE SHELTER AND SPONSORS BRING HOLLYWOOD TO THE MAGIC CITY TO HELP THE HOMELESS
In Sony Pictures' upcoming release "The Pursuit of Happyness," Oscar nominee Will Smith plays an unemployed homeless single parent, living in shelters, bus stations, bathrooms or wherever he and his young son can find nightly refuge. Although this true story ends with Smith's character finding success on Wall Street, many homeless people in Birmingham and across the country are less fortunate.

To help increase awareness of the needs of Birmingham's own homeless community, Sony Pictures has authorized a special premiere screening of "The Pursuit of Happyness" which will benefit The Old

Firehouse Shelter. Since 1983, The Old Firehouse Shelter has provided homeless men in the downtown area with care, support and a warm bed for the night.

The Birmingham screening is scheduled for December 7 at the Alabama Theatre - a full week prior to the film's nationwide release date of December 15 - giving local film fans a chance to see this highly anticipated holiday release before the rest of the country. Doors will open at 6:00 PM, and the film will begin at 6:45 PM. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Thanks to the sponsorship of law firm Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, LLC and Colonial Properties Trust as well as support from Sony Pictures, the premiere is free to all who attend, although moviegoers will be encouraged to make donations to support the work of The Old Firehouse Shelter. There will be a short presentation prior to the film that will explain the programs and services offered at the shelter.

"Each month, The Old Firehouse Shelter serves 500 to 600 homeless men," says Trish Diak, a lawyer with Haskell Slaughter and Board member of The Old Firehouse Shelter. "We hope this inspirational movie will raise awareness of those less fortunate among us while motivating others to help fight this ever-present city issue."

Steve Freemen of The Old Firehouse Shelter says, "This premiere is a fantastic way to focus attention on the roughly 3,000 homeless individuals here in our area while bringing community members together. We are grateful to Haskell Slaughter and Colonial Properties Trust for helping to make this event possible and to Sony for allowing us to show this film before its official release.
