Saul Ewing LLP Attorney to Serve on Attorney General Elect?s Transition Team
Dan Friedman, Special Counsel in the Litigation Department in Saul Ewing LLP’s Baltimore office, will serve on Attorney General-Elect Douglas F. Gansler’s Transition Committee. Mr. Gansler will transition from the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office to become Attorney General of Maryland, replacing Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr. on January 3, 2007.

In early November, Mr. Friedman assisted Mr. Gansler’s attorneys in preparing court arguments regarding Mr. Gansler?s eligibility to run for attorney general. An Anne Arundel County circuit court judge ruled that Mr. Gansler's combined legal experience and 17 years as a member of the Maryland State Bar met the constitutional requirement, and dismissed the case.

Mr. Friedman received his B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Maryland in 1988, and earned his J.D., with honors, from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1994. He is the author of The Maryland State Constitution: A Reference Guide and teaches constitutional law at University of Maryland School of Law.

HASKELL SLAUGHTER'S NETTLES REAPPOINTED BY THE ALABAMA SUPREME COURT TO TWO KEY COMMITTEES
Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, LLC partner Bert S. Nettles has been reappointed by the Alabama Supreme Court to the Alabama Pattern Jury Instructions Committee - Civil and the Standing Advisory Committee on the Alabama Rules of Appellate Procedure. Each committee has 18 judge and lawyer members, and all appointees serve for three-year terms.

The Alabama Pattern Jury Instructions Committee - Civil has been in existence for 40 years, and Mr. Nettles has served for fifteen years. It is charged with drafting jury charges in simple and understandable language consistent with legal requirements. The Committee is also in the process of rewriting all existing jury charges in "plain English" format. Because the pattern jury instructions have been a great aid to members of the legal profession in Alabama, the process has been adopted in other states.

Mr. Nettles has served on The Standing Advisory Committee on the Alabama Rules of Appellate Procedure for six years. The Committee reviews rule changes that the Supreme Court is contemplating, as well as making additional suggestions, before potential changes are circulated to the entire bar for comment.

Bert Nettles focuses his practice on the defense of complex civil litigation, with particular concentration in punitive damages claims (including bad faith and fraud actions), extra-contractual claims against insurers, and professional liability claims. He also maintains an active appellate practice and has appeared before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Nettles joined Haskell Slaughter in 2003 after serving as a senior partner of other firms in Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama.

Mr. Nettles has been appointed as a Deputy or Assistant Attorney General by four different Alabama Attorneys General to represent the State of Alabama in various complex civil lawsuits. In addition, he has served as counsel to the Alabama Insurance Underwriting Association for over 20 years. Mr. Nettles is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Insurance Law.

A former president of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Mr. Nettles has also served on the Advisory Committee for the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and was a member of the Alabama State Legislature from 1969 - 1974. He also served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Gulf Coast from 1983 - 1988 and as Assistant Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama from 2000 - 2003.
