White & Case in Russian Eurobond First
White & Case represented Gazprombank on the first fully convertible Russian rouble Eurobond to be issued in the international markets by a Russian borrower. The issue took the form of loan participation notes issued by an Irish SPV, the proceeds of which were on-lent to Gazprombank. The offering of RUB10 billion (€292 million) 7.25 percent Notes due 2010 was arranged by ABN Amro and Barclays Capital.

"The rouble has undergone a sustained period of recovery since its devaluation during the Russian financial crisis almost a decade ago," commented Rachel Hatfield, lead White & Case partner advising on the deal. "There has long been an active domestic Russian market for rouble bonds and we have also seen rouble denominated bonds placed internationally, but this transaction is novel in that the bonds are also settled, through the European clearing systems, in roubles. The deal was several years in the making and paves the way for greater liquidity in the Russian bond market. Given the appetite for Russian risk and the strength of the rouble, I think we will see a number of these deals in the coming months."

The White & Case team acting on the Gazprombank transaction was led by partner Rachel Hatfield, working alongside associate Andrew Clugston and trainee Valerie Goldstein in London and associate Anton Kudachkin in Moscow.

Thomas A. Spratt, Jr. Receives Philadelphia Bar Association's Craig M. Perry Service Award
Thomas A. Spratt, Jr., an associate with Pepper Hamilton LLP, has been awarded the Craig M. Perry Service Award for his volunteer work with the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project (CBAP), the Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP) and the Support Center for Child Advocates.

Mr. Spratt was honored at the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division annual meeting, which was held at the Doubletree Hotel on Wednesday, February 21. Former Bar Association Chancellor Alan M. Feldman also was honored at the meeting.

The Craig M. Perry Service Award is presented annually to a young lawyer who has devoted substantial time and energy to community-oriented activities, including, but not limited to, pro bono and charity work. Mr. Perry was a member of the YLD Executive Committee who suffered an untimely death. He was very involved in community service and active in student-related and other YLD programs.

Since 2005, when the bankruptcy laws were amended, Mr. Spratt has actively encouraged law firms and attorneys to volunteer with CBAP. Mr. Spratt organized a program for bankruptcy attorneys at the Philadelphia law firms based on the theme “What Are You Afraid Of?” He led a panel discussion that described the steps required under the Bankruptcy Code amendments to properly represent a pro-bono Chapter 7 debtor for CBAP. The panel demonstrated that compliance with the Code amendments is readily achieved. Mr. Spratt routinely takes pro bono cases from CBAP and Philadelphia VIP. CBAP’s assistance not only helps clear debts for some of Philadelphia’s poorest residents, but also allows them to stay in their homes and keep their utility services connected.

Mr. Spratt’s selection for this honor follows another Pepper attorney, associate Kassem Lucas, who received the award in 2006.
