Honigman Grows New Ann Arbor Office - New associate is added to firm's Corporate and Securities Department
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP today announced that Richard D. Hoeg has joined the firm as associate in the Corporate and Securities Department. Hoeg will practice in the firm’s new Ann Arbor office. In addition to his other Corporate and Securities work, Hoeg will provide counsel as a part of Honigman’s Private Equity and Venture Capital Practice Group.

“Rick brings experience in corporate and securities law; mergers and acquisitions and in working with technology-based companies,” said David Parsigian, partner in Honigman’s Corporate and Securities Department and managing partner of the firm’s Ann Arbor office. “Our new office is committed to growing the local economy and Rick will be involved in Honigman’s efforts to serve the needs of Ann Arbor’s business community.”

Most recently, Hoeg served as associate in the Corporate and Securities Department in the Ann Arbor office of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone P.L.C., where he worked closely with Parsigian, who joined Honigman in January 2007. A magna cum laude graduate, Hoeg received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich.

Opening in the first quarter of 2007, Honigman’s Ann Arbor office will provide a full range of business-related legal services, including support for the firm’s Private Equity and Venture Capital Practice Group. The Group represents private equity funds and investors in a wide variety of transactions throughout the United States including tax structuring, complex negotiations, financing and the execution of acquisitions and investments.

Robert G. Walkowiak Joins Honigman's Labor and Employment Department
Robert G. Walkowiak recently joined the Detroit-based law firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP as an associate in its Labor and Employment department. He works in Honigman’s Detroit office.
Before joining Honigman, Walkowiak spent three years at the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C. where he served as senior staff counsel to Chairman Robert J. Battista. He also was an associate in the Labor Law practice at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Washington D.C. Walkowiak performed a one-year clerkship with the Honorable Sarah L. Wilson on the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington D.C.
Walkowiak graduated with honors in 2001 from the George Washington University Law School, where he served as a member of the George Washington International Law Review and the Moot Court Board. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Eastern Michigan University in 1998. Walkowiak serves as a contributing editor for The Developing Labor Law. He resides with his wife Brandi in Northville, Mich.

HASKELL SLAUGHTER’S HORTON TO SPEAK AT GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY’S HEALTHCARE CORPORATE COMPLIANCE PROGRAM
William W. Horton, an attorney with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, LLC, will be a program panelist for the Graduate Certificate Program in Healthcare Corporate Compliance offered by George Washington University’s College of Professional Studies and School of Public Health and Health Services. The program will be held on March 6 in Alexandria, Virginia. Mr. Horton has served as a panelist for the program in each semester since the program was initiated in Fall 2005.

George Washington University’s Healthcare Corporate Compliance Graduate Certificate Program provides a comprehensive corporate compliance education for current or prospective corporate compliance officers. This unique program offers education in healthcare laws and regulations, as well as tools and strategies for creating effective corporate compliance programs. The program consists of an initial five-day residency in Alexandria, Virginia, followed by a six-month interactive distance learning segment, and concludes with a three-day capstone residency in Alexandria. Bill Horton currently serves as Chair of Haskell Slaughter’s Transactional Practice Group and leads the firm’s healthcare practice. A nationally recognized speaker and author on healthcare, corporate and securities law, and professional responsibility topics, Mr. Horton has held leadership positions for several years with the American Health Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association’s Health Law Section. Karl J. Sleight, Executive Director of the New York State Ethics Commission, To Join Harris Beach
Albany, New York…Karl J. Sleight of Saratoga Springs, Executive Director of the New York State Ethics Commission, will join the law firm of Harris Beach PLLC as a member of the firm. Mr. Sleight will practice from the Albany and New York City offices. Mr. Sleight will co-lead the Harris Beach Government Investigations and Defense Team and be a member of the Business & Commercial Litigation Practice Group. He will advise clients on matters related to corporate compliance and government investigations, and federal and state regulatory actions. His practice will also include representing businesses and institutions in white collar criminal defense. Mr. Sleight will not be a lobbyist.

Spitz, Jr. said: “Karl’s service to New York state as head of the Ethics Commission combined with his background as a state and local prosecutor will be a valuable asset to our clients facing today’s increasingly complex government regulations relating to almost every phase of business operations.”

The Harris Beach Government Investigations and Defense Team provides clients preventive counseling, representation in administrative and civil proceedings, defense of corporations and individuals, and electronic information counseling and management.

Mr. Sleight was appointed Executive Director of the New York State Ethics Commission in March 2001. During the past few months, Mr. Sleight led the Ethics Commission’s investigation of former New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi. Mr. Sleight previously served as Deputy Inspector General with the Office of the State Inspector General (OSIG), where he was responsible for overseeing investigations into corruption, fraud and criminal activity at several state agencies that regulate the health care industry.

Prior to joining OSIG, Mr. Sleight served in the Office of the Attorney General from 1995 to 1999 under former Attorneys General Dennis C. Vacco and Eliot Spitzer. As an Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Sleight was primarily responsible for prosecuting complex narcotics organizations, government corruption, and homicide cases. He was the only attorney in the office assigned to both the Organized Crime Task Force and the Capital Assistance to Prosecutors unit.

In 1997, Mr. Sleight received the Attorney General’s Louis J. Lefkowitz award in recognition of exceptional service for his prosecution of a narcotics cartel operating throughout the eastern United States. In 1999, he received a special recognition award from the New York State Police in appreciation for his prosecution of a case of murder and attempted murder in Franklin County. From 1992 to 1995 he was the Chief Assistant District Attorney in Cayuga County. From 1991 to 1992, Mr. Sleight was an Assistant District Attorney in Fulton County. Mr. Sleight is a member of the Steering and Publication Committees of the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws and the New York State District Attorneys Association. He is vice president and a member of the Executive Committee of the Saratoga County Bar Association. Mr. Sleight was appointed by former Governor George Pataki as a commissioner of the Saratoga-Capital District State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commission. He has made numerous presentations and published articles on topics related to ethics in government. Mr. Sleight has conducted Continuing Legal Education programs in conjunction with the New York State Bar Association and the Government Law Center of Albany Law School. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Saratoga Central Catholic School.

Mr. Sleight received his J.D. from the Syracuse University College of Law and a Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Siena College.

Eckert Seamans Expands Health Care Practice in Boston with Addition of Attorney Alexander
The national law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC today announced that attorney Jeffery M. Alexander has joined the firm as a member. Prior to joining Eckert Seamans, Mr. Alexander was a partner with the law firm of Brown Rudnick.

As a member in the firm’s Health Care Practice Group, Jeffery M. Alexander has decades of experience assisting taxable and tax-exempt health care providers across the country with every aspect of health care law, from day-to-day legal issues to pursuit of capital for their business transactions. He is particularly versed in hospital, physician, and physician-hospital corporate, regulatory, medical staff and accreditation matters. Mr. Alexander is a frequent lecturer to hospital, physician, academic and other professional audiences, and he has also taught at the University of Rochester Medical School, Brown University Medical School, and the University of Connecticut Graduate and Undergraduate Schools of Business Administration. He is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University in 1980 and his Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating summa cum laude, from Boston University in 1977. Mr. Alexander is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, New York, Florida, and Rhode Island.

Labor & Employment Practice and Others Appear in National Litigation Rankings
A national, online legal news source has recognized Barnes & Thornburg LLP’s Labor and Employment Law Department for the number of cases it handled in 2006 relating to discrimination defense, disabilities, Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) work and labor disputes. The rankings appear in Law360's 2007 Litigation Almanac, which reviewed the federal court dockets for the top 300 firms across the nation when ranking the firms.

The survey found that Barnes & Thornburg ranked seventh for its involvement in disability cases, ninth for discrimination defense work, 23rd for cases related to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), and 26th for labor disputes. Combined, the firm's labor and employment group ranked 11th for all employment disputes.

The survey also revealed that Barnes & Thornburg had the second-fastest growing discrimination practice in the country, up 123 percent in 2006, and ranked fourth in the growth of its ERISA cases.

“Given our distinctive and dedicated approach to employment law, we are pleased our practice is being recognized on a national level," said Ken Yerkes, chair of the firm's Labor and Employment Law Department. "Our client-focused approach and cost efficiencies have allowed us to build a significant practice that grows continually, and we are grateful for those clients who consistently place their trust in us.”

The firm gained top 100 recognition for other practice areas as well. Barnes & Thornburg's Intellectual Property Department ranked 14th in trademark litigation, 24th in patent litigation and 64th in copyright litigation. Outside the categories of employment and intellectual property litigation, the firm ranked 46th in product liability litigation.

Kirkland & Ellis LLP Powers Deal for Astoria Generating
Kirkland & Ellis LLP is advising Astoria Generating and its majority owner Madison Dearborn Partners in its merger with EBG Holdings LLC, under which the companies will be combined in a transaction valued in excess of $5 billion.

The strategic combination creates a leader in power generation serving the constrained energy markets in the New York and Boston metropolitan areas as well as a platform with sufficient size and scale to take advantage of potential growth opportunities.

The combined company, which will be named US Power Generating Company will own and operate eight power generation facilities with a total capacity of over 5,000 Megawatts (MW). US Power Generating subsidiaries will continue to sell their energy and capacity into the NYISO and ISO-New England deregulated markets. The combined company will represent generation sufficient to serve approximately 20% of the overall load in New York City as well as approximately 50% of the overall load in the Boston metropolitan area.

The Kirkland deal team was led by partners Mitchell Hertz and Richard Campbell.
