Mr. Trujillo’s practice focuses on corporate transactionalwork, including project, structured, and cross-border finance, as well as restructurings, mergers and acquisitions, commercial arbitration, joint ventures and investment projects throughout Latin America and other emerging markets. Mr. Trujillo’s arrival further deepens Arnold & Porter’s historic strength in the region. He joins a recently expanded team of lawyers practicing in Latin America.

“Juan is a welcome addition to our international corporate practice, which has a thriving base in Latin America,” said firm Chair Thomas Milch. “We believe his expertise will be an ideal fit in New York, a vital center for international transactions.”

Mr. Trujillo served as the seller’s lead counsel in the sale of the largest mining company in Bolivia and Argentina. The multi-jurisdictional transaction was listed as one of the “20 Top Deals in Latin America” by LatinFinance in 2005. Mr. Trujillo advised the lenders in the acquisition financing for a controlling interest in thirteen airports located in Mexico.

He has represented clients in multiple financings of various power plants in Latin America, including the financing of a thermoelectric power plant in Brazil, selected as project finance deal of the year in 2002 by Project Finance magazine, and other project finance transactions in Mexico, Chile and Guatemala. Mr. Trujillo also advised a financial services client in connection with its $5.2 billion investment program, including credit facilities with the International Finance Corporation (World Bank), the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, and multiple commercial lenders. He has represented clients in joint ventures including a U.S. asset management company in a $420 million joint-venture with Brazil’s largest commercial bank and advised on another joint venture between the largest mining company in Bolivia and the Commonwealth Development Corporation in the UK.

Commenting on his arrival at Arnold & Porter, Mr. Trujillo said, “I am looking forward to joining a team that has exceptional breadth and depth of experience in Latin America, in both complex transactional matters and corporate dispute resolution.”

Last month, a significant international arbitration team led by partners Paolo Di Rosa and Gaela Gehring Flores joined the firm, along with international corporate lawyer Raul Herrera, who has extensive experience throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. They join an existing team of lawyers representing public and private sector clients throughout the region, including the central banks or ministries of finance of a number of Latin American countries.

William Hubbard Honored with Professionalism Award
At the Biennial Judicial Conference of the Fourth Circuit at the Greenbrier in West Virginia, the Honorable William W. Wilkins, Jr., presented Columbia Partner William C. Hubbard the American Inns of Court’s 2007 Professionalism Award for the Fourth Circuit. He is the first South Carolinian to receive the award since its inception in the Fourth Circuit in 1998, according to the organization. The Fourth Circuit covers Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

The Fourth Circuit Professionalism Award is presented biennially to honor a practicing judge or lawyer whose life and practice display sterling character and unquestioned integrity, coupled with ongoing dedication to the highest standards of the legal profession. Candidates are nominated through circuitwide open nominations and selected by a panel of representatives from both the circuit and the American Inns of Court Foundation.

Joseph F. Anderson Jr., Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, nominated Mr. Hubbard for the honor along with the John Belton O'Neall Inn of Court.

"In one of his plays, Shakespeare extolled the virtues of 'adversaries in law' who 'strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends.' William Hubbard is a ferocious competitor in the courtroom, zealously advocating for his client's cause, but he always earns the respect and friendship of his adversary sitting at opposing counsel's table," Judge Anderson wrote in his nomination.

His nomination was endorsed by the current and past 12 presidents of the John Belton O'Neall Inn of Court of Columbia, of which he is an active member, and was supported by State Supreme Court justices, federal judges, and leaders of both the South Carolina Bar and the ABA.

"As a partner at the law firm of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, William has spearheaded the firm's initiatives to improve character, competence and conduct in the legal profession through its sponsorship of the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center of Professionalism at the University of South Carolina School of Law.," Chief Justice Toal wrote.

Mr. Hubbard was born and raised in South Carolina and graduated from the University of South Carolina where he earned both his undergraduate degree (magna cum laude) and his Juris Doctor. After clerking for a year with U.S. District Court Judge Robert F. Chapman, he entered private practice where he has focused on business litigation. In 1986, he was named the South Carolina Bar’s Young Lawyer of the Year.

Mr. Hubbard serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of South Carolina and was its chair from 1996 to 2000. He was also president of the region’s Council of Boy Scouts; serves on the board of Voices for South Carolina Children, which promotes early childhood education; was a founding director for City Year-Columbia, a youth service organization; and has been a leader in the American Bar Association, presently serving as South Carolina’s State Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates.

The American Inns of Court Foundation, America’s oldest, largest, and fastest growing mentoring organization, presents Professionalism Awards at participating circuits nationwide. The awards are underwritten in part by Thomson-West Group.
