A few weeks ago, we had a poll on Judged about whether it was worse to sleep with the partner’s wife or the firm’s cleaning lady.  Several people wrote in and commented something along the lines of, “which ever one is hotter”.  Someone actually wrote in and explained to me why it’s a better idea to sleep with the cleaning lady, because then if you get caught, you probably won’t get fired.  Nice.  We lawyers are a classy bunch.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the perks of working for a big law firm. Students are asking about riding around in limos, bonuses, firm retreats…the list goes on and on. And yes, I have to admit, bonuses and firm retreats are a very real part of working at a big firm (not so sure about the limo though). However, I think people get so caught up in the perks they forget about one thing…the actual amount of work and time you put in at a big firm. I can’t stress this enough…some big firm associates literally work around the clock. As an associate, you definitely earn those perks.

I’m not saying working at a big firm is horrible or anything like that; I know lots of associates who love their jobs. However, I guarantee that if you’re there solely for the perks and aren’t interested in the actual work you’re doing, you probably will not last that long.  Because after a couple of years, there’s not a vacation destination or amount of money that will compensate for working 70 hours a week at a job you’re not interested in.

This is an older article, but I was interested in the part about the attrition rate at for fifth year associates at law firms jumping from 53.4 percent in 2003 to 78 percent in 2005.  At that, in a couple of years, every associate in America is going to be playing musical chairs with the law firms.

This article poses the legitimate question of whether America has
outgrown its sexist and racist past to the extent that it’s ready to
elect someone other than a white male as President. While like many
Americans I would like to say yes, honestly, I’m not so sure.

Take a look at Slate’s pick of political cartoons for the week…this pretty much sums it all up!
