According to reports, firms in the D.C. area have the highest per capita receipts of any place in the US.

ACLU sues to block paper ballots in Ohio

The ACLU has sued to block Cuyahoga county, Ohio, from conducting any election with paper ballots. Whether this could prevent any election results for Ohio's March primary is uncertain.

Holocaust survivor lawyer dispute still raging

Professor Burt Neuborne represented various Holocaust survivors against Swiss banks, and won a $1.25 Billion settlement. He then wanted to be paid $3.1 million, which has been attacked as immoral profiting. He got that, but now his further request for $300,000 in interest is causing lots of wailing.

Sallie Mae refinances $31 Billion; drops lawsuit over failed buyout.

The large financier Sallie Mae has received a commitment from seven banks to refinance $31 billion dollars in debt; a much needed boon for the large company. In addition, Sallie Mae has dropped a lawsuit against some investors that backed out of purchasing the lender.

The Knights of the Round Table? With suitcases instead of swords?

The company Lyondell Chemical has a slightly--okay, more than slightly-- unusual practice or award for it's outside counsel. It knights them. Or at least holds a ceremony, complete with swords and proclamations. This past December, 17 attorneys were "knighted" into the ten year old "Knights of the Lyondell Enterprise" organization. Each got a neat perk, too: a four foot long sword. Here's a flavor of the ceremony, or proclamation: Recounting a November trial. "And in the late hour of the last week, the swords of the Enterprise Knights did break the blades of the enemy into shards. And in that moment, the clouds parted and a silver finger of Divine light shone forth."

Houston minority bar association calls for DA's resignation

The Houston Lawyers Association, a minority bar group that represents African-American attorneys, has called for Harris County D.A. Chuck Rosenthal to resign after emails were found on his office computer that were considered demeaning to women or African-Americans. The emails first started surfacing in late 2007.

PA midsize firms claim increased 2007 revenue.

Many midsized Pennsylvania firms had a nice increase in revenue, mostly due to an increase in the rates they charge. They took advantage of higher big city firm rates to bump up theirs as well.
