Settlement Reached in San Diego Diocese Chapter 11 Case
James I. Stang, Robert Orgel, Hamid Rafatjoo and Gillian N. Brown represented the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the chapter 11 case of The Roman Catholic Bishop of San Diego. Through intensive litigation during the six months of the bankruptcy, the Committee thwarted the Diocese's strategy to force survivors of clergy sexual abuse to accept below average settlements. On September 7, 2007, the Diocese announced a settlement for 144 survivors and its intention to dismiss its chapter 11 case. The settlement represents the highest average per survivor settlement for any group settlement of claims against a Catholic diocese in the United States. Pachulski Stang Ziehl & Jones has represented more committees in Catholic diocese chapter 11 cases than any other firm in the country; representations include committees in the chapter 11 cases of the Diocese of Spokane and the Diocese of Davenport.

Five Cadwalader Partners Named in 2008 D.C. Edition of The Best Lawyers In America
Five Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP partners were recognized as leaders in their fields in the 2008 D.C. edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Lawyers were selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers based on an exhaustive and rigorous peerreview process.

Appearing for more than the tenth time in the publication, Raymond Banoun was cited for his work in the area of White-Collar Criminal Defense. Also noted in this category was Michael E. Horowitz, who was honored for the first time by Best Lawyers. Bruce Hiler (Corporate Governance and Compliance Law, as well as Securities Law) and Charles F. (“Rick”) Rule (Antitrust Law) both made return appearances in the publication, while Mark C. Ellenberg (Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law) was named for the first time. Best Lawyers made its choices based on more than 2 million confidential evaluations performed exclusively by top attorneys in the country, as well as thousands of extensive telephone
interviews with leading attorneys throughout the balloting process. The Best Lawyers rankings are especially prestigious because attorneys are not allowed to pay a fee to be listed, instead appearing in an advertisement-free book to honor all those chosen. The new Best Lawyers list of D.C.-area attorneys will appear in a special section of The Washington Post Magazine on September 30, 2007.

“I am exceptionally proud of Ray, Michael, Bruce, Rick and Mark,” said Robert O. Link Jr., Cadwalader's chairman and managing partner. “The number of our D.C. attorneys that were chosen by Best Lawyers, along with the breadth of fields they cover, reflects the strength of our D.C. office.,” Link added.

In the U.S., Best Lawyers publishes an annual referral guide, The Best Lawyers in America, which includes 29,575 attorneys in 78 specialties, covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Defense Verdict for Christopher James Pakuris in Sex Discrimination Case
Philadelphia partner Christopher James Pakuris received a defense verdict in a 3½-day sex discrimination and Pennsylvania Wage Payment Collection Law violation case in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. The female plaintiff alleged that she had been fired from one restaurant/club owned by the defendants because she was female.
