BUCKINGHAM, DOOLITTLE & BURROUGHS, LLP AWARDS LEGAL DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP.
The law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP (“BDB”) is pleased to announce that its second annual Diversity Scholarship has been awarded to Edlyn Hernández, a first year law student at the University of Miami School of Law. Ms. Hernández will receive a $5000 cash award and a paid clerkship at BDB’s Boca Raton office during the summer following her first year of law school.

At the University of Miami School of Law, Ms. Hernández is a CLEO/Thurgood Marshall Associate and a member of the Hispanic Law Students Association. She will receive her J.D. in May 2009.

Ms. Hernández earned her B.A. in Psychology, cum laude, with a double minor in Philosophy and Legal Studies, from Brandeis University in May, 2006. While at Brandeis University, Ms. Hernández was Co-founder and President of Brandeis Salseros, an Intercultural Center Representative for AHORA! (Hispanic and Latino Organization) and the Director of Interfaith Relations (Catholic Student Organization). Ms. Hernández is a member of the American Bar Association (Law Student Division and Section of Business Law), the Hispanic National Bar Association and the Cuban American Bar Association.

Minority students in their first year at all accredited Ohio and Florida law schools were invited to apply for BDB’s Diversity Scholarship. First-year minority law students of African-American, Hispanic, Asian or Native-American descent who demonstrated leadership skills, a commitment to excellence, service to the community and academic strength were eligible for the scholarship award.

The Diversity Scholarship Program is an important component of BDB’s ongoing commitment to diversity in the legal profession. “We are very excited to present the second annual BDB Diversity Scholarship to Edlyn Hernández. While a number of outstanding candidates applied for this scholarship, Ms. Hernández possessed the exact attributes that BDB was seeking in the scholarship recipient: leadership skills, commitment to excellence, service to the community and academic achievement. We are looking forward to Ms. Hernández joining us this summer as a law clerk and having the opportunity to work with this exceptional young woman,” said Jan E. Hensel, Employment & Workers' Compensation Practice Group Chair and Diversity Committee Chair of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP.

SQUIRE SANDERS EXPANDS LA LITIGATION PRACTICE
Two experienced litigation lawyers with a national client base are joining the Los Angeles office of global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P.

Douglas J. Rovens and Steven A. Lamb join Squire Sanders from the Los Angeles office of Zelle Hofmann. Rovens was the managing partner of that firm’s Los Angeles office.

“We are delighted Doug and Steve have joined our litigation practice. They are well respected trial lawyers with a wealth of experience representing national clients in high-profile cases including consumer class actions, commercial cases, intellectual property, toxic torts, securities litigation, environmental litigation and real estate disputes,” said Jake Broderick Jr., managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office.

Broderick said Rovens and Lamb are well known to, and have longtime relationships with, key Squire Sanders clients such as BP, as well as having an independent client base that includes financial services clients such as CitiGroup, entertainment industry clients such as C3 Entertainment (The Three Stooges™) and Prologue Films, and real estate and hospitality clients such as American Golf. Rovens and Lamb first came to Squire Sanders’ attention when they teamed with Squire Sanders litigator James E. McDonald in the firm’s Miami office to represent the plaintiff in the 2005 AlphaMed business interference, unfair competition and trade secret misappropriation case. This controversial case resulted in a $78 million jury verdict, including $30 million in punitive damages, now under appeal in the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

“The decision to ask Doug and Steve to join us after learning they were interested in moving was an easy one, given their extensive prior experience and the complementary nature of their practices,” Broderick said.

He said Rovens and Lamb will expand the reach of the firm’s litigation group both Southern California and nationally. Some recent Southern California litigation representations have been on behalf of national clients such as Bridgestone and EaglePicher, non-US clients such as Dainippon Ink and Chemicals and Universe Sourcing of America, as well as local municipal governments in the cities of Pomona and West Covina.

Rovens and Lamb previously were part of litigation boutique Rovens, Lamb and Gase, which combined with Zelle Hofmann in 2004. Rovens received his B.A. in 1978 from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his J.D., magna cum laude, in 1982 from Southwestern University in Los Angeles, where he was executive editor of the law review. Lamb received his B.A. cum laude, in 1980 from Claremont Men’s College. He served 13 years in the US Army, where he attained the rank of major. Lamb received his J.D. in 1987 from the University of Southern California and then served in the US Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). He received an LL.M. from the Judge Advocates General’s School in 1993.

Squire Sanders’ Los Angeles-based lawyers focus their practice on corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, commercial litigation, international dispute resolution, products liability, immigration, public finance and employment matters. Lawyers in this office represent clients such as Closet World, Cintas, the City of Los Angeles, Singapore Airlines, China Airlines, Mexicana Airlines and Korea Airlines. Several of our lawyers have served in federal and state government agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the IRS, the Department of the Treasury and the California Department of Justice. Clients recognize our ability to offer counsel locally and through our network of Pacific Rim offices including Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.
