Melody Ray-Welborn Selected For Triangle Business Journal's 7th Annual 40 Under 40 Leadership Award
Melody Ray-Welborn, an associate of Womble Carlyle's Business Litigation Practice Group in its Raleigh office, has been selected to receive the Triangle Business Journal's 7th Annual 40 Under 40 Leadership Award. This award honors the brightest, most promising young business people under the age of 40 in the Triangle.

Melody was selected not only for her substantial business achievements, but for her extraordinary personal and community contributions as well.

For the past two years, Melody has committed a large amount of her personal time and commitment to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Specifically, Melody implemented the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Summer Food Service Program at Womble Carlyle. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded program operated nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered at the State level by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The SFSP is designed to bridge nutritional gaps for children during non-school months. The SFSP provides an opportunity to continue a child’s physical and social development while providing nutritious meals. The SFSP helps lower income children return to school in the fall months ready to learn.

In the summer of 2005, Melody created a system and structure that would allow all employees of Womble Carlyle to receive paid time away from work for visiting a local housing community, Walnut Terrace, and providing free lunches through the SFSP to any child under age 18 in that community. By enlisting volunteers throughout the firm’s Raleigh office, Melody and her group created a way to have hands-on involvement with these children. Five days a week from May through August, Melody and her fellow volunteers went to a local neighborhood and set up lunch for the children of that community. With no infrastructure in place for the implementation of the SFSP in this community, Melody organized and led her group to provide a free, nutritious meal to any child under 18 who would walk up and take part in this lunch. Melody’s group would not only come to the site, but would be in charge of assembling and distributing the food to each child.

Womble Carlyle was the first organization to adopt and implement this partnership concept that involves a company, like Womble Carlyle, assuming responsibility for providing a volunteer team at a specific community site in order to distribute meals to children each day throughout the summer. With Melody’s leadership, the firm is currently working with Inter-Faith’s director to present this model to other businesses who may wish to give back to the community in this way.

In conjunction with the summer lunches they provided, Melody also worked with the firm to collect funds to buy school supplies for each child at the end of the summer. She partnered with Scholastic and one of its local representatives to obtain new books that were donated to the children who participated in the lunch program.

A special supplement will be published as part of the May 25th issue of the Triangle Business Journal detailing Melody's achievements.

The Mid-Atlantic Capital Alliance (www.macalliance.com) connects people, ideas and capital at all stages of company growth and investment – from venture to buyout. It serves as an advocate for promoting the mid-Atlantic region as a hub for entrepreneurship, corporate growth and investment. It is a collaboration among funds, investors, entrepreneurs and companies for the advantage and benefit of all.
