Leading White Collar Defense Attorneys Join Kelley Drye
Kelley Drye announced that three partners have joined the firm’s white collar practice group in the New York office. The group includes Don Buchwald, Alan Kaufman and James Keneally, all leaders in defending corporations and individuals in criminal and civil cases, government investigations and enforcement proceedings, and related matters. All were partners at Buchwald & Kaufman LLP, a New York City law firm focused on white-collar defense.

"Buchwald, Kaufman and Keneally have built a reputation for smart, effective advocacy in many high-profile, white-collar cases,” said John M. Callagy, Chairman of Kelley Drye. "We are pleased to have their formidable experience to offer to clients facing threats to their reputations, finances and freedoms.”

The three well-known lawyers have defended individuals, corporations, partnerships, and professional associations before the SEC, NASD, FTC, federal courts throughout the country, and in the state courts of New York. Current and former employees of leading financial services, telecommunications, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, consumer goods and other companies have relied on the team for defense against charges ranging from accounting and tax fraud, kickbacks and bribery, insider trading, and other alleged criminal behavior.

Don Buchwald co-founded Buchwald & Kaufman in 1980. Prior to co-founding the firm, Mr. Buchwald was Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. In that role he was responsible for authorizing and declining prosecutions and for managing relations with agents of the FBI, Secret Service, SEC and the Postal Inspection Service. He began his legal career as an associate at the Manhattan law firm of Marshall, Bratter, Greene, Allison & Tucker. Mr. Buchwald is the president of the Federal Bar Foundation.

Alan Kaufman, the other co-founder of Buchwald & Kaufman, was also for seven years a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, serving as Chief of the Official Corruption Unit and then as Chief of the Organized Crime Strike Force. From 1999 to 2002, Mr. Kaufman left the firm to return to public service as Chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, overseeing as many as 160 Assistant U.S. Attorneys. Earlier in his career, Mr. Kaufman was a law clerk for Judge Paul Weick of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He currently serves on the Disciplinary Committee of the First Judicial Department of the Appellate Division.

James Keneally joined Buchwald & Kaufman in 1988. As is the case with his partners, Mr. Keneally’s practice consists mainly of the defense of federal and state criminal matters. Before joining Buchwald & Kaufman, Mr. Keneally was a litigation associate at Summit Rovins & Feldesman in New York City. He is a director of the Federal Bar Foundation.

Kelley Drye has substantial experience in representing corporations and individuals in all stages of grand jury investigations, criminal trials and other criminal proceedings, and related civil litigation and administrative enforcement actions. Our partners in the White Collar Crime/Internal Investigations practice group include former federal prosecutors and public defenders who in private practice have a long track record of successfully defending the firm’s clients in criminal and related proceedings. Members of the practice group also have conducted numerous internal investigations for corporations and institutions relating to alleged misconduct giving rise to possible criminal liability by the corporation, the institution or employees. Closely related to internal investigations, this group also helps corporations develop and execute corporate compliance programs and codes of conduct, including compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

GAQS Partner John Lacy Admitted to American College of Trial Lawyers
Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel partner John R. Lacy has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in America. Lacy is one of only 26 trial attorneys from Hawaii who are Fellows of this highly prestigious association, which is dedicated to improving and elevating the standards of trial practice, the administration of justice and the ethics of the trial profession.

“We are elated to have John’s knowledge and expertise recognized by the American College of Trial Lawyers,” said managing partner Gary Slovin. “In his 34 years with the firm John has amassed a very distinguished record as an advocate, with a dedication to promoting the highest standards in trial practice. This tremendous honor underscores John’s abilities and rightfully places him among the top trial attorneys in the nation,” Slovin added.

More than 800 people attended the induction ceremony, which took place during a recent meeting of the College in La Quinta, California.

Founded in 1950, the College is comprised of the best trial lawyers from the United States and Canada. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only to experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers are marked by the highest ethical and moral standards. Membership cannot exceed 1 percent of the total lawyer population of any state or province.

“It is truly an honor to become a Fellow of this distinguished College,” Lacy said. “Our entire litigation group at Goodsill is dedicated to reaching and exceeding the highest standards in trial practice and the legal profession. It is very gratifying to be recognized by your peers,” Lacy added.

Lawyers must have a minimum of 15 years’ trial experience before they can be considered for Fellowship.
