Premier Midwest Appellate Lawyer Moves Practice to Briggs
Eric J. Magnuson—a recognized leader in the appellate and trial bar, and appellate treatise author, editor and speaker—joins Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association, as a shareholder in the business litigation section.

“Eric’s knowledge and experience as appellate counsel is unparalleled in our state,“ says Alan Maclin, Briggs and Morgan president. “For Briggs to land the state’s preeminent appellate advocate is Apr-07 tremendous ‘win’ and we look forward to further growing our appellate practice under Eric’s strategic direction.”

Magnuson’s arrival at Briggs corresponds with the May 2007 closing of his previous firm, Minneapolis’ Rider Bennett, LLP. He is joined by one of his Rider partners, Diane B. Bratvold, whose appellate practice offers similar depth and accomplishment.

“Prior to joining Briggs and Morgan, I had long associated this firm with the strong abilities of its attorneys and their high level of professionalism,” says Magnuson. “This is an opportunity to offer an enhanced range of appellate consulting services, while also introducing new initiatives that will raise the profile of Briggs’ appellate practice. I look forward to expanding my collaborative appellate practice both within and outside the firm.”

Eric Magnuson, shareholder, has spent the last two and half decades practicing almost exclusively in appellate law, including consultation at both the trial and appellate levels. In his more than 30 years of experience, he has provided a full range of appellate consulting services, handling hundreds of appeals in a wide range of areas, including constitutional issues, employment law, trust and probate matters, trade secrets, business contracts, insurance law, land use, governmental law, and professional liability.

Among his other contributions, he is: fellow and past president of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers; a board member of the Minnesota chapter of the Federal Bar Association; founding president of the 8th Circuit Bar Association; co-reporter to the Minnesota Supreme Court Appellate Rules Committee; and past co-chair of both the American Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Committee of the Section on Litigation and Appellate Advocacy Committee of the Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section.
