Alan Price Quoted on the Steel Industry’s Concerns over Chinese Exports
Wiley Rein International Trade partner Alan Price was quoted in a Financial Times article on how increased Chinese steel production may lead to internationally depressed steel prices. The paper reported that in the previous 18 months, China went from a small net importer of metal to a net exporter, producing 35 million tons last year. Despite purported initiatives by the Chinese government to consolidate the national steel industry – which would push up Chinese steel prices and make the global steel industry more competitive – little has changed since 2004 and much of China’s extra output is still driven by investment in smaller companies.

Such data demonstrate that the “commitment by the Chinese government to encourage consolidation is hollow,” said Mr. Price, who represents industry clients including Nucor Corporation, the country’s most diversified domestic steel producer. Price cautioned that net steel exports from China would continue to grow, potentially doubling from last year to 70 million tons.
