Larry Besnoff Speaks at National Waste Conference and PBI Employment Law Program
Larry Besnoff, a partner at Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP, in the Labor Relations and Employment Law Department, presented a program on May 7, 2007, with Arthur Cohen, Vice President of Human Resources and General Counsel of Concorde, Inc., at the National Waste Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, entitled "Don't Hire A Crook" concerning reference checking.

Besnoff also spoke at the PBI Employment Law program on April 19, 2007, on litigating retaliation cases after the Supreme Court's Burlington Northern decision.

Fasken Martineau Welcomes Florence Dagicour
Claude Auger, managing partner of the Montreal and Québec City offices of the law firm Fasken Martineau, is pleased to welcome Florence Dagicour in the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Practice Group as a lawyer.

A doctor in law, Mtre Dagicour specializes in issues relating to climate change and carbon markets, and advises clients on all aspects relating to these issues. Florence Dagicour is also one of the only lawyers in Canada to specialize in nuclear law.

"For several years, protecting the quality of the environment has topped the agenda of decision-makers across the planet. The need to protect the air, water, soil and natural resources has profoundly changed our social attitudes and our political and legal priorities. The arrival of Mtre Dagicour rounds off our team of experienced and proactive lawyers who have a global view of the issues that need to be resolved and are able to propose concrete and innovative solutions," declared Mr. Auger.

Mtre Dagicour practiced at Desjardins Ducharme after a stint in Brussels with the European Commission's Environment Directorate-General.

Called to the Québec Bar in 2005, Ms. Dagicour served as notary public clerk in France before obtaining a licence, two master's degrees and one doctor of laws in public international law. Mtre Dagicour also holds common law and civil law licences from McGill University.

Mtre Dagicour has written several articles on issues relating to climate change, carbon markets and nuclear law. Florence Dagicour will be practicing in our Montreal offices.

Lawrence M. Gold to Serve on the Board of Trustees of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights
Atlanta Shareholder Lawrence M. Gold has been asked to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. Mr. Gold will replace Carlton Fields Shareholder Sylvia Walbolt when her term expires this December.

The LCCR was formed in 1963 to involve the private bar in securing equal justice under the law for segments of our society who have been subjected to various social injustices. The stated mission of the Committee is "to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice under law." The Committee implements its mission by marshaling the pro-bono resources of the bar to serve as co-counsel in a variety of cases involving the deprivation of civil rights.

Stoel Rives Principal Appointed to Portland Planning Commission
Michelle Rudd, a principal in the law firm Stoel Rives LLP, has been appointed to the Portland Planning Commission. Her term will expire in January 2011.

In recommending Rudd for the position, the Portland Bureau of Planning stated, “She will bring legal land use knowledge to the Commission along with her passion for the City, the community, and fairness and equality, and a strong understanding of practical and economic considerations.”

The Portland Planning Commission is composed of nine members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The Planning Commission advises City Council on any proposal that directly affects any goal or policy related to any element of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Commission also may review and comment on the implementation of city policies in relation to land use issues, amendments to the Zoning Code, urban renewal plans, transportation plans, public facilities plans, tax abatement programs and other citywide policies.

Rudd practices real estate, development and environmental law, focusing on complex land use permitting and litigation. She works with clients to develop their property and has successfully guided a variety of development applications through numerous jurisdictions. She has extensive experience in condemnation law and has also represented parties in development approval, easement and title insurance disputes before the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals, the Oregon District Court, the Oregon Court of Appeals and the California superior courts. Rudd is licensed to practice in Oregon, California and Washington State. She earned her J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, her M.S. in city and regional planning from the University of California at Berkeley and her B.S. in civil engineering from Stanford University.

Stoel Rives Principal Joins American Electronics Association
Todd Bauman, a principal in the law firm Stoel Rives LLP, has joined the Executive Committee of the American Electronics Association’s (AeA) Oregon Council. He is a former Chair of the AeA Oregon Council’s Emerging Business Committee.

Founded in 1943, AeA is a nationwide trade association that represents all segments of the technology industry. The Oregon Council Executive Committee, composed of 16 executives from Oregon member companies, provides direction for local council programs and the council’s public-policy activities.

Bauman practices in Stoel Rives’ Business Services Group, primarily in corporate securities and general corporate law. He is the Chair of the firm’s Technology Ventures Group and a member of its Executive Committee. Bauman has broad experience representing emerging growth and technology companies in private and public financings, SEC reporting and compliance, and acquisitions and divestitures. He also has extensive experience representing venture capital and private equity firms regarding their organization and investments. Bauman earned his A.B. with distinction from Stanford University, and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
