BusinessWeek Quotes Greg Vojack on the Kazakhstan's Nascent Stock Market and the Almaty Regional Financial Center
In BusinessWeek's article, Gregory J. Vojack, Managing Partner of Bracewell & Giuliani's Kazakhstan practice, discusses how the KSE100 index has soared tenfold since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Kazakhstan government launched the Regional Financial Center in Almaty with tax incentives to attract the spate of local companies that have opted to list in London. KazMunaiGas E&P, a unit of the state-owned oil and gas company, recently staged a record $2 billion IPO.

In residence in Kazakhstan since July 1994, Mr. Vojack is responsible for the firm's office in Almaty, Kazakhstan and practice in Central Asia. During his residence he has been the Project Director of the USAID Securities Market Development Project and Outside Legal Counsel to the World Bank. His work in the Commonwealth of Independent States led to the development of the capital markets in Kazakhstan. In Chambers & Partners Global: The World's Leading Lawyers - 2004, Mr. Vojack was recognized for his corporate/commercial work in Kazakhstan.

Lou Mazawey is the co-chair for ALI-ABA's conference on Retirement, Deferred Compensation, and Welfare Plans for Tax Exempt and Governmental Employers, September 6-8 in Washington, D.C. David Powell will participate on two panels regarding 409(b) regualtions and a Church Plan update.

Foley DC Office Establishes Summer Internship Program
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that it has created a summer internship program with the University of Virginia Law School with the aim of providing opportunities for law students to provide valuable legal assistance to underserved populations.

University of Virginia law student Mark T. Gannon has been selected as the inaugural intern. For eight weeks, Gannon will be working with Just Neighbors, a nonprofit dedicated to providing immigration services to low income clients. After working with Just Neighbors, Mark will spend two weeks at Foley's Washington, D.C. office, concentrating on pro bono matters.

Gannon, a second-year law student at the University of Virginia School of Law, has previous experience with pro bono issues. As a paralegal prior to attending law school, he represented tenants in situations dealing with poor housing conditions. In addition, he has coordinated service projects including housing revitalization projects and blood drives in the West Philadelphia area as philanthropy chair of his college fraternity.

Gannon graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. He plans to use his law degree and pro bono experience to continue to assist low-income clients with their legal needs.

Just Neighbors provides immigration legal services to low-income immigrants and refugees of all faiths and nationalities. Their team of attorneys, staff and volunteers offers help to immigrants seeking to navigate the current immigration system and to gain access to benefits that will enable them to become more contributing members of society.
