Bettina Plevan of Proskauer Rose Named One of 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America by National Law Journal
Bettina B. Plevan, a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP, an international law firm with over 700 lawyers worldwide, has been named one of the 50 most influential women lawyers in America by National Law Journal magazine in its May 28 "Profiles in Power" feature. Ms. Plevan, who serves as co-chair of Proskauer's International Labor & Employment Practice, was cited for her work promoting diversity and pro bono initiatives while president of the New York City Bar as well as her extensive employment defense work and numerous other positions and initiatives demonstrating her commitment to using the law to effect change.

"Betsy has an extraordinary track record of service to the legal community and we're extremely proud she has been recognized by National Law Journal for what we and her peers have long been aware - that she is one of the most talented and influential attorneys in the country," said Allen I. Fagin, chairman of Proskauer.

Lawyers were nominated by the readers of National Law Journal, one of the country's leading publications covering attorneys and the law, for national impact in their fields and beyond during the last five years. The magazine's editorial staff then selected the 50 lawyers featured in the "Profiles in Power" section.

The achievements that led to Ms. Plevan's inclusion encompass both her work at Proskauer and in the legal community. During her tenure as the second woman president of the 23,000-member New York City Bar, Ms. Plevan was responsible for a number of important achievements including: increasing the private bar's commitment to pro bono work; increasing access to justice for the underserved; protecting the civil rights of all citizens; and promoting diversity in the legal community.

At Proskauer, the labor and employment matters she has handled on behalf of clients in a diverse range of industries such as banking and finance, professional services, health care, entertainment, publishing, and consumer products include: being called upon by some of the nation's top law firms to provide the full range of employment advice, from counseling on hiring and firing practices to defending against discrimination claims; defending against discrimination class actions; serving as Bristol-Myers Squibb's go-to employment litigation counsel; extensive work for CBS and Lazard; representing Meritor Savings Bank in the remand of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case; and representing Penthouse magazine in the successful reversal of a multimillion dollar punitive damages award against it. She is also head of the firm's Client Team Program, which is dedicated to growing client relationships and maximizing the firm's interdisciplinary approach on behalf of its clients.

In addition, Ms. Plevan has served on a number of important judicial committees and in leadership roles at nonprofit and legal organizations including: acting as president of the Federal Bar Council; serving as chair of the Second Circuit Judicial Conference; serving as co-chair of the Gender Bias Committee of the Second Circuit; sitting on the American Bar Association Board of Governors; serving on the boards of the Legal Aid Society and Volunteers of Legal Service; serving as a member of the board and executive committee of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (which recently gave her its prestigious "Law & Society Award"); and serving as a member of Senator Charles Schumer's Judicial Screening Panel. She also serves as pro bono general counsel to The Bold Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to helping corporate America diversify its leadership.
