Sutherland Attorneys Jacob Dweck, David L. Wochner and Michael W. Brooks Win Distinguished 2007 Burton Award for Legal Achievement
Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces that partner Jacob Dweck and associates David L. Wochner and Michael W. Brooks have won the 2007 Burton Award for Legal Achievement for their article, entitled, “Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Litigation After the Energy Policy Act of 2005: State Powers in LNG Terminal Siting,” published in the Energy Law Journal in 2006.

The Burton Award is a national program run in association with the Library of Congress and dedicated to refining and enriching legal writing by lawyers and law school students. Now in its eighth year, the competition is open to the top 1,000 law firms in the nation, and only 30 entries are named award winners.

Mr. Dweck, Mr. Wochner and Mr. Brooks practice within the Energy and Environmental practice group at Sutherland in the Washington, DC office. Their winning article examined the federal, state and local litigation landscape for the siting of liquefied natural gas import terminals in light of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The article notes that as the United States moves toward increasing LNG importation and developers race to construct import terminals, the relatively young U.S. LNG industry is experiencing growing pains that have created obstacles and opposition to the LNG movement.

“The Sutherland piece provides readers with an even-handed discussion of the range of potential legal challenges and conflicts stakeholders on both sides of the debate should expect,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Sutherland’s Managing Partner.

Finally, the article analyzes issues significant to U.S. energy and environmental policies at a time when the country’s energy needs and environmental concerns are at the forefront of public debate.
