Charles L. Smith receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Charles L. Smith, of counsel in Jackson Walker's Litigation section, has been recognized by his alma mater, St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Smith, a 1955 graduate of the law school, was honored at the May 19 commencement ceremony.

This is not the first major accolade for Mr. Smith, who is a member of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He will also be recognized in June as an "Outstanding Fifty-Year Lawyer" by the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation.

With more than 50 years of litigation experience, Mr. Smith primarily focuses on tort litigation in the state and federal courts. He has served as President of the State Bar of Texas and the San Antonio Bar Association and was Chairman of both the Commission on Judicial Conduct and the Commission for Lawyer Discipline. He currently serves on the Board of Disciplinary Appeals. He has been involved in state, regional, and national legal associations throughout his career.

Jackson Walker is pleased to congratulate Mr. Smith on this well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gibbons congratulates its 37 attorneys who were named to the New Jersey Super Lawyers list for 2007. These attorneys were recognized by their peers as among the state's leading lawyers in 19 practice areas.

Michael Griffinger was named among the top 10 attorneys in the state by the publication. Five Gibbons attorneys were also named among the state's top 100 lawyers - Christine Amalfe, Karen Giannelli, John Gibbons, Michael Griffinger and Larry Lustberg. Christine Amalfe, Kim Catullo and Karen Giannelli were also named to the list of the top 50 female attorneys in the state. These honors distinguish Gibbons as one of the leading firms in the state with the most top 50 women and the most top 100 lawyers listed.

WHITEFORD, TAYLOR & PRESTON OPENS OFFICE IN FALLS CHURCH
Prior to its 75th anniversary, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston (WTP) is proud to announce the opening of its Falls Church office. Located at 3190 Fairview Park Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042, the office officially opened for business on May 31, 2007.

“We’re mapping out our spot in Virginia,” explained Andrew J. Terrell, managing partner of WTP’s District of Columbia office. “The firm has had a large office in D.C., covering the city as well as the Virginia and Maryland suburbs, for 20 years. However, as the firm’s Virginia client base has grown, it became imperative to have an office that was convenient to our clients. The new office replaces and upgrades the firm’s previous Virginia space in Alexandria, which was used solely for meetings.”

The new office [will] contain 9,000 square feet and office space for 15 attorneys. The initial group of lawyers transferring to the space practice in the area of Community Associations, representing condominium and homeowners’ associations and property management companies throughout the Commonwealth. By September, this initial group will be joined by corporate lawyers and litigators to broaden the services available to clients.

Eighteen percent of WTP’s attorneys are currently admitted to the Virginia bar. Raymond J. Diaz, Edward J. O’Connell, Michael Gartner and Katherine C. McCarthy are the attorneys moving into the space immediately. The space also includes offices for visiting attorneys from WTP’s other offices in Baltimore, Towson, Columbia, and the District of Columbia.

Freshfields 'Ready for Work' programme awarded Business in the Community Big Tick
Leading international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Business in the Community (BITC) Big Tick for its 'Ready for Work' programme.

The Big Tick is given to companies that can demonstrate the positive impact of their responsible business behaviour on society as well as on the company itself. The decision to award the Big Tick was made by a panel of independent, experienced practitioners.

Commenting on the award, Guy Morton, joint senior partner at Freshfields said, 'This is excellent news and a great credit to all the staff at Freshfields who have been involved in the 'Ready for Work' programme. We are proud of all the hard work that has gone into helping make the programme the success that it is today and look forward to continuing to support the work of BITC.'

Launched in Freshfields' London office in 2000, the 'Ready for Work' programme, together with BITC's Business Action On Homelessness, offers two-week work placements to homeless people. The main aim is to provide people with the opportunity to learn essential employability skills, enabling them to enter the job market and consequently achieve independent living. To date, Freshfields has provided 114 homeless people with placements and 14 have taken up permanent positions with the firm, while others have got jobs elsewhere.

Freshfields has built up partnerships with eight homelessness organisations, working with them to provide suitable work placements for their clients. At least 30 of Freshfields' staff are involved in the process and the firm currently aims to offer at least 20 placements per year.

Two Freshfields partners sit on BITC's Business Action on Homelessness Executive Forum and the London Steering Group.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

Addax Petroleum lists on the LSE and completes US$300m convertible bond placing
Addax Petroleum Corporation, an international oil and gas exploration and production company with a strategic focus on West Africa and the Middle East, has announced that its common shares have been admitted to the Official List of the Financial Services Authority and have commenced trading on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. Addax Petroleum is one of the largest independent oil and gas companies listed in London when measured by market capitalisation, production and reserves.

International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is the legal adviser to Addax in connection with the listing. The Freshfields team includes corporate partners Simon Witty and Jonathan Rees and corporate counsel Clara Gonzalez-Martin.

Freshfields (corporate partners Simon Witty and Edward Cole and counsel Clara Gonzalez-Martin) also advised Addax on the private placement of its US$300m 3.75 per cent convertible notes due 2012, which were admitted to the Official List of the Financial Services Authority and to trading on the Professional Securities Market of the London Stock Exchange today.

Fenwick & West LLP represented Photobucket, Inc. in its recently announced acquisition by Fox Interactive Media, a division of News Corporation (NYSE: NWS). Photobucket, based in Palo Alto, CA, links billions of personal photos, graphics, slideshows and videos daily to hundreds of thousands of web sites, including MySpace, Facebook, eBay and Craigslist. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
