Thomas H. Kovach Elected Chair of the Litigation Section of the DE State Bar Association
Thomas H. Kovach, an associate with Pepper Hamilton LLP, has been elected Chair of the Litigation Section of the Delaware State Bar Association.

Mr. Kovach concentrates his practice in intellectual property litigation, environmental matters and general commercial litigation. His practice in the intellectual property area includes patent infringement litigation and trademark disputes. His environmental work includes Brownfields transactions, compliance, enforcement, administrative issues and litigation. Mr. Kovach’s general commercial litigation practice includes representing clients in contract and other commercial disputes.

Active in the Delaware State Bar Association, Mr. Kovach is the past chair of the Environmental Section and is a member of the bar association’s Intellectual Property Section. Mr. Kovach has authored materials and lectured on issues of environmental law practice.

For more than 75 years the Delaware State Bar Association (www.dsba.org) has organized and united the lawyers who practice in the State of Delaware and served as their professional association. The Association offers members a growing list of services and benefit plans together with Continuing Legal Education programs designed to improve the quality of the profession, the practice of law, the operation of the courts and the competency of lawyers.

With over 300 current members, the Litigation Section is the second largest section of the Delaware State Bar Association. The Section’s mission is to improve the public legal services rendered by its members, promote the professional development and interests of its members, serve the communities where members live and practice, and provide a common interest forum for all attorneys who represent litigants in civil proceedings within the State of Delaware. The Section holds annual Continuing Legal Education Seminars, monthly section meetings, various social events, and sponsors a Delaware High School mock trial team at a national competition.

To qualify, Rising Star nominees must be 40 years old or younger, or practicing for 10 years or less. Candidates were nominated by 2006 Massachusetts Super Lawyers and then researched and evaluated by Law & Politics' research department based on 12 factors, including peer recognition and professional achievement.

In addition to the attorneys being listed in the publication, which is produced jointly by Law & Politics and the publishers of Boston magazine, Kathryn Conde, partner in the Litigation Department, is the subject of a feature article.

Laura Ariane Miller Named One of the 50 Most Influential Women in America By The National Law Journal
The list recognizes women in the United States with the demonstrated power to change the law, shape public affairs, launch industries, and get big things done. Laurie Miller focuses her practice on white collar criminal defense work. The National Law Journal noted her work on behalf of a U.S. Congressman who is under investigation and her work in securing a presidential pardon for a client convicted on federal criminal tax charges. In addition to representing corporations, Ms. Miller also represents executives and employees in investigations of alleged securities and financial reporting fraud and in a host of other government investigations. She was one of 10 lawyers selected to train Sudanese lawyers for proceedings in the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Harvard University, and Yale University, and is a former clerk for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron R. White.

John Hardaway Discusses IP Issues in Presentation to Japanese Officials
John Hardaway, a Member (partner) in Nexsen Pruet’s Greenville office, recently completed a series of presentations in Japan in which he discussed intellectual property issues with a broad range of officials and business representatives.

Hardaway, who concentrates his practice in IP and international law, was part of a delegation of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He provided a series of briefings regarding the Hague system of international registrations of industrial designs, which provides a streamlined mechanism for the protection of designs in multiple countries.

His audiences included the Japanese Patent Office, the Japanese Patent Owners Association, the Japanese Patent Attorneys Association, and the Tokyo High Court.

Hardaway, who in addition to his law degree has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in ceramic engineering, is past chairman of the AIPLA’s Intellectual Property Practice in Japan Committee.

He is also chairman-elect of the U.S. Section of the Federation Internationale des Conseils en Propriete Industrielle, the only worldwide organization of IP attorneys in private practice. Additionally, he served as president of the Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law Association of the Carolinas and chaired the Japanese Patent Office Liaison Council of the U.S. Bar.

New Attorneys Boost Nelson Mullins Financial Team in Atlanta
Two corporate attorneys with extensive experience in financial transactions have joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP as partners in its Atlanta office, boosting the Finance team in Atlanta to 15 attorneys.

Attorney William R. Gaines Jr.William R. Gaines Jr. joins Nelson Mullins from Alston & Bird, while Stephen F. White joins from Hunton & Williams. Both attorneys have considerable experience in debt finance and corporate transactions, and Mr. White has broad real estate experience.

"We are pleased to welcome Steve and Will to the Firm," said Richard Herzog, who heads the debt finance and restructuring practice in Atlanta. "Both bring a wealth of experience that will both benefit our clients and complement our growing practice group."

Attorney Steve WhiteMr. White has extensive experience in the areas of finance and commercial real estate, which includes representing financial lending institutions in construction and permanent lending; owners and investors in the acquisition and disposition of commercial real estate throughout the United States; developers in the construction of office, industrial, multifamily, and retail projects; and landlords and tenants with respect to industrial office and retail developments.

Mr. Gaines concentrates his practice on corporate finance transactions, including leveraged buyouts and other acquisition financings, syndicated credit facilities, private and public debt offerings (including convertible note offerings), various asset-based financings, reorganizations and workouts. Mr. Gaines represents lenders, underwriters and borrowers/issuers. He has experience in senior, second-lien, mezzanine and subordinated tranches of financings and intercreditor and subordination issues.

Mr. Gaines earned his Juris Doctor in 1997 from Georgetown University Law Center where he was a staff member of The Tax Lawyer. In 1993, he earned a B.S. in accounting, magna cum laude, from Berry College. Mr. Gaines is a member of the board of directors of the Grant Park Conservancy and the board of visitors of Berry College. He is also active in the Berry College Alumni Association, the Grant Park Conservancy, and St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mr. White is a former member of the State Ethics Commission (1995-97) and a former member of the board of directors of the Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Atlanta Bar Association, and is admitted to practice in Georgia.

He was named a Real Estate Super Lawyer, as published in Atlanta Magazine and Georgia Super Lawyers magazine (2004-05); named one of Georgia Trend's 2005 and 2006 Legal Elite, a listing of Georgia's "most effective lawyers," selected by Georgia attorneys and published in Georgia Trend Magazine (2005); and was selected to be included in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

In 1982, Mr. White earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law. He earned an Artium Baccalaureus degree, magna cum laude, in 1979, from the University of Georgia

G. Crawford Moorefield Adds to Strasburger's Tax Practice
Strasburger & Price, LLP, proudly welcomes G. Crawford Moorefield as Partner in our Houston office, expanding our Tax practice in that location.

Mr. Moorefield will use more than two decades of experience in all aspects of U.S. Federal Income Tax and Texas State Tax Planning for clients.

Acquisitions, divestitures, monetizations and specialized capital structure planning are some of Mr. Moorefield's areas of practice. He also has extensive experience in tax related bankruptcy and troubled-company restructuring.

"Strasburger's Tax practice is very strong throughout the firm. The addition of Mr. Moorefield to our Houston office will allow us to better serve our local clients with their Federal Income Tax and Texas State Tax planning needs," said Partner-In-Charge of Strasburger's Houston office, Betsy Kamin.

Mr. Moorefield received his A.B., cum laude, from Princeton University in 1984, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1987. He is a member of the Texas State Bar and comes to Strasburger from a large national firm.
