Jerome Katz Joins Ropes & Gray’s Litigation Department
"Ropes & Gray is pleased to announce that Jerome C. Katz has joined the firm’s Litigation Department as a partner. Katz will base his practice in the firm's New York office.

A veteran commercial litigator, Katz has represented clients in complex litigations in various venues in the United States and abroad, including contract, securities, libel, products liability and reinsurance matters. He has also steered disputes through arbitrations and mediations.

Katz comes to Ropes & Gray from Chadbourne & Parke, where he accumulated an impressive record of high-profile litigation successes. For example, he frequently represented a leading satellite manufacturer in contract disputes in the U.S. and abroad. He represented a prominent investment bank in a dispute with the IRS and others concerning the availability of tax credits in connection with synthetic fuel plants, and another investment bank in a dispute involving nearly $1 billion in letters of credit. He also represented a Middle Eastern bank that wanted to unfreeze assets in the U.S. after the normalization of relations between Libya and the U.S.

“Jerry will significantly enhance our footprint in New York,” said Bob Fischler, the co-chair of Ropes & Gray's Securities Litigation Practice Group. “With his long, successful track record of steering clients through complex disputes, Jerry adds to the breadth of our already impressive litigation capacity. We are delighted to welcome him to the firm.”

Katz is recognized in a number of leading directories of commercial litigators, including The Best Lawyers in America, Lawdragon 3000 Leading Lawyers in America, New York Super Lawyers, and The Legal 500 (United States). In addition, he is a court-appointed neutral mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He is also active in the community, serving as a board member for The Legal Aid Society, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the Citizens Budget Commission. Finally, he is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and of the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association.

Katz is a magna cum laude graduate of Duke University, where he was named to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his law degree from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and associate editor of the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. He is admitted to the bar of the State of New York, and he is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts in New York; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; and the U.S. Supreme Court."

DLA Piper gets tick of approval from Business in the Community
"DLA Piper is delighted to announce that it has received a 'Big Tick' at Business in the Community’s (BITC) Silver Jubilee Awards for its 10 year partnership with The Prince's Trust.

The BITC Silver Jubilee Awards recognise companies that are integrating responsible business practice into their main operations and are delivering positive impacts on the marketplace, the workplace, the environment or in the community.

DLA Piper's award is shared with long term charity partner, The Prince's Trust . This particular award is for groups of two or more companies who have worked together for 10 years and who through collaborative action are having a positive impact on communities.

DLA Piper's partnership with the Prince's Trust has existed for over 10 years. The objective of the relationship was, and still is to develop a mutually beneficial range of CSR opportunities with strong societal impacts. One example of this is the Building Better Lives initiative. Building Better Lives is a scheme that provides long-term employment opportunities to disadvantaged young people, and at the same time addresses the acute shortage of labour in the construction industry.

Julia Cleverdon CEO of BITC commented: ""I am delighted that DLA Piper was awarded a big tick for its long standing relationship with the Princes Trust. The Jubilee Big Tick is recognition of DLA Piper's outstanding commitment to responsible business and the notion that business can and should make a positive impact on the communities in which it operates.""

Nigel Knowles, Joint CEO of DLA Piper commented: ""We are enormously pleased at the recognition that are partnership with The Prince's Trust has received from the BITC. CSR is, and will continue to be at the heart of our business and I am very proud of the real difference we are making through Building Better Lives and other initiatives.""

Martina Milburn, Chief Executive of youth charity The Prince’s Trust comments: ""The partnership between DLA Piper and The Prince's Trust is an ideal charity-corporate partnership which has grown significantly over the course of the last 10 years. DLA Piper has been instrumental in helping The Trust to develop in new areas like construction. With their dedicated support we have been able to address the skills shortages that exist in this industry, giving disadvantaged young people the chance to improve their confidence and gain vital trade skills. We are delighted that the partnership has been recognised with a Silver Jubilee Big Tick award."

DLA Piper completes largest ever European flotation
"DLA Piper UK LLP has completed one of the largest ever stock market flotations within the law firm's European operation with the £453 million listing of eaga plc.

The legal team, led by Sheffield corporate partner Jon Kenworthy and assisted by Alex Tamlyn in London, acted for the energy conservation giant which was previously one of the largest employee-owned companies in the country.

Eaga is the market leader in the delivery of residential improvements in the environmental, social justice and energy efficiency arenas. The sum raised from its flotation will be used as working capital to support further growth and distributed to employee owners.

Eaga's core focus is working with Government, local authorities and utility companies to reduce carbon emissions, combat fuel poverty and reduce energy consumption.

Efforts are focused mainly on the housing and social needs of low income and vulnerable households. The company's portfolio of products and services include providing energy surveys and advice, allocating and administrating energy efficiency funding, installing central heating, loft and cavity wall insulation.

Jon Kenworthy said: ""This is certainly one of the biggest ever main market flotations done by DLA Piper in the UK and, I believe, in Europe.

""There are very few advisers outside London who could handle a flotation of this size and complexity. The work was handled almost entirely in Sheffield which demonstrates the calibre of this office as a whole, not just the corporate division.

""This flotation is right for eaga and its shareholders. The company has a strong and trusted reputation in the public and private sectors and is led by a highly experienced management team.""

The flotation saw the placing of approximately £220 million worth of ordinary shares to UK investors on the Stock Exchange. Eaga will have a market capitalisation of approximately £453 million based on the placing price.

Increased regulation and greater public awareness of the challenge posed by climate change is driving rapid growth in eaga's market. The company has invested significantly in recent years in the development and support of its UK infrastructure and has a strong financial track record. Last year's revenues were £354 million and underlying operating profit was £19.5 million.

Commenting on the flotation eaga Chief Executive Officer John Clough said: ""We were delighted with the quality of legal support provided by DLA Piper - Jon and his team contributed very significantly to the successful implementation of our flotation.

""We were keen to communicate the eaga story to our investors and are extremely pleased to have received such strong support and to establish a high quality shareholder base.

""Going public will help us to achieve our corporate and social objectives and we look forward to life as a listed company and to being able to take advantage of the many growth opportunities open to us.""

Salans, led by partner, Richard Thomas, advised eaga's employee benefits trust on this transaction."

McGuireWoods Partner Recognized As One of the 50 Most Influential Women in the Country
Anne Marie Whittemore, a partner in the Richmond office of McGuireWoods LLP, was named by The National Law Journal as “One of the Most Influential Women” in law. This is the first time the weekly national legal publication has created this list, published in its May 29, 2007 issue since 1998. Whittemore is the only lawyer in Virginia to be recognized with this honor.

In introducing the 50 women recognized across the country, The National Law Journal wrote, “We asked our readers to nominate female attorneys who have had a national impact in their fields and beyond during the last five years. The list reflects not just some of the most influential women lawyers, but some of the most influential lawyers, period.”

Whittemore is a commercial litigator at the trial and appellate levels. Her work focuses on general corporate, securities, environmental and constitutional matters. She counsels clients on corporate governance and serves on the boards of public companies. Virginia Chief Justice Leroy Hassell selected Whittemore to chair the Commission on Virginia Courts in the 21st Century — a report which looks at the court system over the next 15 years, and addresses how to provide for the fair and efficient administration of justice for all Virginians. She is a permanent member of the 4th Circuit Judicial Council. Whittemore also is a member of McGuireWoods’ Executive Committee.

Richard Cullen, chairman of McGuireWoods, said, “Anne Whittemore brings great credit to our law firm. We are extremely proud she is our partner. She exemplifies all that is good about the legal profession and has been a wise counselor to countless individuals and organizations in Virginia and across the country.

Suzanne S. Mayes Joins Cozen O’Connor as Co-Chair of Public & Project Finance Practice
Cozen O’Connor announced that Suzanne S. Mayes joined the firm today, as a member and co-chair of the public & project finance practice. Mayes has more than 15 years experience in municipal finance and project finance law, including economic development, single-family, multi-family and senior housing, transportation, government and education financings. She was previously a partner at Saul Ewing LLP. Mayes will work from Cozen O’Connor’s Philadelphia office to further grow the firm’s public and project finance work throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, along with her practice co-chair Rafael Perez, of the firm’s Newark, N.J., office. She will also continue serving as bond, underwriter’s, borrower’s and special counsel to diverse state, county and municipal entities as well as for-profit and non-profit organizations, including higher education institutions, during the financing and implementation phases of major capital projects and debt refinancings.

“Cozen O’Connor’s reputation in the public & project finance market and its involvement in high profile deals are well-known,” said Mayes. “I’m thrilled to join a team of top-notch practitioners and help them deepen the firm’s work in an even broader range of industry sectors.”

Mayes has a strong track record in an array of bond financing deals, ranging from education and housing to sports arenas. She has counseled issuers on student loan bond financings, completed numerous financings for state-level housing authorities in the region, and acted as co-bond counsel in connection with Philadelphia’s two new sports stadiums, among other projects.

“Our firm has worked with Suzanne on deals in the past. We have sat across the table from her and seen her broad base of knowledge and quality client representation. She knows how to access and work with the people and capital you need to get a deal done, quickly, efficiently and effectively,” said Michael J. Heller, chair of Cozen O’Connor’s business law department. “Suzanne will be a great asset to our corporate team, as we serve clients here and across our expanding national footprint.”

Mayes is active in her profession and the community. A former chair of the Tax-Exempt Finance Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Business Law Section, she played an instrumental role in forming and leading a Mid-Atlantic women’s public finance forum -- convening prominent bankers, financial advisers, issuers and borrowers of municipal debt, bond insurers, trustees and lawyers to discuss industry issues.

Mayes also currently serves as board member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s (PBA) Commission on Women in the Profession. In 2006, she was recognized for her work as co-chair of the Commission’s Membership Committee with a PBA Special Achievement Award. In addition, Mayes was recently named a Pennsylvania Superlawyer.

A resident of Fort Washington, Pa., and a member of the Forum of Executive Women, she serves as president of the Mount Saint Joseph Academy Alumnae Association and sits on the Manor College Board of Trustees.
