TOM MCQUAIL JOINS HOWREY
Howrey LLP has announced that Tom McQuail will join its top ranked antitrust practice effective immediately. McQuail will join the European antitrust team and together with colleagues will establish a competition practice in Howrey’s London office. He joins from Lovells.

Howrey Chairman and CEO, Robert F. Ruyak, said “Tom McQuail is one of Europe’s leading competition lawyers and just the right person to help us establish our competition practice in London. Our office there has built an excellent reputation in both IP and Litigation and it is now time to add Howrey’s third practice group- Antitrust- to serve our clients. We welcome Tom back to London and to the Howrey team.”

Tom McQuail specialises in EU and UK competition law, handling a broad range of advocacy and contentious work, including merger control proceedings, investigations under Articles 81 and 82 EC Treaty, distribution related issues and compliance. His experience covers range of industries including chemicals, consumer electronics, consumer goods, energy, forest products, insurance packaging, software, steel and telecommunications.

McQuail joins an expanding London office which has seen a number of recent prominent lateral hires and whose litigation practice has a number of partners with extensive experience in national and multinational litigation including competition and group actions such as John Evans, formerly an Ashurst litigation partner, who joined Howrey in late 2006. Evans is well known as a litigator of complex high-value claims, has been at the cutting edge of group action litigation for the best part of 15 years and is currently working on competition litigation with Howrey attorneys in both Europe and the US.

Trevor Soames, head of Howrey’s European Antitrust practice, said “Our strategy to build Howrey’s European offices with first class European lawyers has been very successful. Since it first opened in Europe in 2001, the firm has grown to more than eighty lawyers throughout Europe from more than fifteen different nations and is growing rapidly driven by client demand. We have developed a significant (and increasing) client base and established excellent relationships with regulators throughout Europe – two of whom have joined Howrey: Götz Drauz, formerly Deputy Director General of DG Competition, and Julian Joshua, former Head of DG Competition’s cartel team. Tom’s proven managerial expertise will help Howrey grow its London-based competition practice at a time when private competition litigation in the UK is becoming a reality. The firm’s expertise, as leader in such litigation worldwide, gives Tom a perfect platform to help Alan Wiseman and the European team to develop the practice yet further. With Tom’s assistance (and that of Sarah Jordan, one of our highly skilled senior associates who will relocate to London) we will now focus on recruiting some additional top-tier competition lawyers at both the partner and associate level. Our focused and successful business model has proven very attractive to competition specialists; our doors are always open to the very best.”

Howrey’s Antitrust/Competition practice has been consistently ranked #1 worldwide, by Global Competition Review’s GCR 100. The practice, founded some fifty years ago, handles many of the world’s top mergers before regulatory agencies on both sides of the Atlantic. The firm’s Brussels office, opened in 2002, has established itself in just over four years, as one of the leading and go-to competition practices in Europe. According to GCR, “Howrey may have created more of a buzz in Europe this year than any other competition practice…the Brussels office exceeded projected revenues by 40 percent…(and) picked up a flurry of new clients.”

Additionally, Howrey’s competition practice handles many litigation matters and has been at the forefront of the recent worldwide surge in such cases.* Howrey has handled several international cartel cases and has successfully represented clients in major class actions. While the firm often represents defendants, Alan Wiseman, co-chair of the firm’s antitrust practice, lead the team which won one of the largest class action settlements in antitrust history on behalf of the tobacco farmers and quota holders.

The firm, by virtue of its expertise in both antitrust and intellectual property law, is a leader representing clients worldwide in cases which focus on the interface of Antitrust and IP law.*

Howrey’s London office opened in June 2001. Currently there are more than 40 lawyers practicing Intellectual Property and complex business litigation law. The office is located in Tudor Street and will move offices to Fetter Lane in 2008.
